Hello,
My Zanussi died yesterday after a good 12 years of service. During the spin cycle it was making a dreadful noise, I stopped the machine immediately but my white wash had turned dark grey. I’ve turned the drum by hand and it isn’t turning properly at all, my amateur diagnostic is the bearings. Given the age of the machine I’ve assumed it’s not worth repairing it and I’ve ordered a new one but my question is this: what is the probable cause of the dark grey colouring of my sheets and is it likely to wash out with my new machine? The colouring is very uniformly spread throughout the wash, it looks like a dark grey Dylon dose has gone in. I tried to hand wash some of the smaller items and the wash and rinse water were very dark grey. After 3 lots of washing and rinsing they had improved a bit. Thank you.

Limescale, loads of limescale inside the tub peeling off and getting washed into the fabrics. Does the drum make a racket on spin? If so it would be uneconomical to fix given its age. 🙁

Yes, thinking about it the spin cycle had been getting noisier in recent weeks but I hadn’t really noticed as I tend to put it on when I’m out. Yesterday it was exceedingly noisey, which is what alerted me to the problem. I live in a hard water area so I use a limescale tab in most washes, but perhaps this wasn’t enough.
What can I do differently to prevent the problem in my new machine?
Will the limescale wash out?
