I have a problem with a Zanussi ZDC 37200W. Initially it produces heat but after 10 or 20 seconds it goes cold.

I removed the back and ran it with the heating element loose so that I could check the feed and the two thermostats. Initially the element got hot, then after about 20 seconds it turned off. This coincided with a relay type click in the main part of the machine and a lack of voltage to the first (90 degree C) thermostat.

On running it a second time it refused to heat up the element at all, so I have unplugged it for now.

Are there any known faults with this machine?

    Glen.

Is the fan blowing through without restriction?

Yes, I think the fan is blowing ok. I have just looked at a wiring diagram and there appears to be a temperature probe in the fan housing at the front of the machine, so I guess this could be at fault.

Could well be! It should read approx 6kohms at ambient by the way.

Ok, thanks. I’ll test that tomorrow.

I gather that the heating element relay can also be the cause of the problem. Can that be replaced, or does it mean a complete new board?

If the heat switches off after 20 seconds or so from start up EVERY TIME then you can rule out the main board ( and the relay on it) as the problem. If the heater relay on that board were faulty then it simply wouldn’t behave so consistently, if you know what I mean.

An error code will show if a component (heater, thermistor etc etc) goes faulty and that is indicated by the start LED flashing alternately red and green. It’s a 2 digit code, count the red flashes for the first digit, then green for the second. A faulty thermistor (aka NTC) for example will throw up error code 72.

    HTH? 😀

    Martin,

    Thanks for that.

Checked the machine again today. When it’s turned on there is a beep and the LED flashes green 3 times, then another beep and it flashes red 20 times. It then keeps beeping and flashing red 20 times repeatedly.

I took out the temperature probe to test the resistance and got a reading of 1.05 K Ohms at ambient temperature, which was probably about 18 – 20 degrees.

It must be going through a mental breakdown judging by that, blimey!

It should be around 6kohms at 20C 🙁

Probably worth replacing it at £27 then?

Well it reads 1Kohm and it should be 6Kohm so I’d say that would be a good move. 😀

Sorry, that was most definitely a rhetorical question. The machine is only just out of its 12 month warranty, so should have a few years left in it yet.
