Hello, my trusty old Hotpoint 7844 dishwasher has developed an intermittent fault. I would say around 1 in every 7 washers the timer decides to stop at the point the soap dispenser is activated. The knob only needs a very slight turn to see it on it’s way again and it then completes the wash no problem. It’s not the end of the world to have to do this but it is mildly irritating and if it’s a simple fix that also extends the life of this obsolete part that would be great.

It’s a mechanical linkage between timer and dispenser so a little ‘lubrication’ may be the only solution? Or, maybe the dispenser latch can be replaced if it is seized. (The latch kit is still available – I think?)

Hi again, checked out the dispenser and it’s an electrical not mechanical link to the timer, it’s operated by a solenoid.
I think the problem is in the timer, it seems to lack the ‘oomph’ to get past the point it triggers the solenoid for the dispenser. I presume buried within the timer is a set of contacts and it’s this that’s stopping it, it doesn’t stop any where else though? Does the timer need to get a message from anywhere else ( sensor ) before it moves on and dispenses the soap?
Could the little motor that drives the timer round be getting ‘lazy’ in it’s old age?
Could the motor bearings be gummy, would a well placed drop of WD40 help?

I think I way have worked it out.
It looks like it may have simply been friction generated by a miss aligned front cover where the dials protrude through. Around a year ago I had to fix some broken wires in the door and in order to get it apart most of the clips on this plastic bit broke off. This meant the plastic trim did not sit flush causing binding of the knob, I have screwed it flush now with three self tappers. So we’ll see!
It is such a well built machine that performs so well I hope I’ve nailed it. I noticed the date 1993 stamped on the timer, don’t make em like this anymore!
