ParticipantOur Hotpoint WML540 door won’t open. AS far as I know the wash cycle finished. The red door locked is on but the door is not budging. Have tried rinse cycle, spin cycle, drain cycle and also draining via the filter (there was water in the machine) – but still no joy. Have also tried leaving unplugged and various other programs but nothing happening. Once or twice it started to move on the rinse cycle but then stopped and just had red door light on. Any ideas gratefully received please.
Thanks 🙂October 19, 2014 at 2:41 pm #420577iadom

If there was a lot of water coming out of the filter then the machine has not drained correctly. Did you remove the pump filter completely and check for any obstructions inside the pump?
There should be an emergency door release, it is a green, plastic tab close to the pump filter, make sure all the water is out and the power is off to the machine before you try and pull it.

Thank you so much for your reply. Removed pump filter and there were no obstructions that we could see – there was about 1/3 of a bowl of water that came out. We found the emergency release and that worked so at least we can get inside now. Checked the pipe the outlet feeds to wasn’t blocked and then plugged it back in again and it started to spin but then stopped mid cycle again after a few minutes. Wondering if it could be something else????

Weirder still it has been stopped for about 10 minutes and we haven’t touched it and it has just this second starting spinning again!!!

How would I find out if it is that??
When we release the door using the lever at the bottom and keep a little pressure on it in a downward motion then close the door it starts working again but when the lever is fully released it stops and the red door light comes on.

You have to remove the main motor and take the brushes off the motor to examine them. Be sure to remove the mains plug before you attempt this.

As easy or as difficult as your skill levels will allow, for me its a piece of cake and takes a couple of minutes. However I have no idea just what your level of proficiency is so have no idea how easy you would find it. 😉
Remove the mains plug, take the lower back panel off and follow your nose.
