Thermal cut out on heater element was OC so bypassed it, reassembled and tested. Machine carried on as before ie stopped after about a minute, timer reset to 0 mins and beeped rapidly in groups of four beeps. No visual indication of error codes. There is continuity across the heater and the NTC reads about 130k ohms cold, and about 65k ohms after a blast with a hairdryer.

The filters are clean and the condenser is not that bad.

    Any ideas folks?

Hoping the “by-pass” was only a temporary measure to test appliance and you are not leaving it like that.
If on sensor drying setting, there was no damp clothes in dryer it would go off after a short period & beep.
Timed drying should be used for testing instead of sensor drying.

    Hi Seamy,

    Yes, the bypass was temporary.

This machine has an ‘automatic’ position which I took to be the sensor-drying setting – is this assumption correct?. I tried it on settings other than automatic.

you have not said if it is heating or not during that minute?
if not look at the heater relay pcb. If there is no heat, programm will abort.

    Hi Eastlmark,

No, it doesn’t heat during that first minute. Still not sure whether or not I was testing it on a timed program. I assumed that ‘automatic’ referred to sensor drying. Am I correct? The heater relay pcb ‘looked’ ok, no burning or discoloured relays etc. I do know that the thermal cut out on the heater was definitely OC so the machine was obviously heating up to the point that this failed. Do you think the thermal cut out failing could have caused a relay to burn out?

even on timed drying i would still not assume the sensor is not active

lift off the lid and place a damp bit of kitchen roll or a small damp cloth across the brush gear. works a treat and saves looking for a pile of wet clothes

    Hi Dave,

A great suggestion, and it hadn’t occurred to me that the sensor might be active on timed drying. Certainly saves the embarrassment of getting the customer to provide wet laundry on the off-chance.

Thanks v much for that, I’ll give it a shot.

If the overheat stat was oc something caused it. I would be looking at either customer stopping programme early even if it is to just check clothes, perhaps ventilation if there is enough to supply the machine or more then likely a blockage somewhere probably in the condenser or in the fan, what the filters like? Are the ones in the door opening blocked? If you take them out hold them up to the light you will see if the micro mesh is clogged which restricts airflow also pet hair etc in the fan restricts airflow which causes these stats to blow, also check the channel from the filters down to the condenser.
The relay is a decent heavy duty relay so I doubt the stat going oc would damage it, plus it must of been working for the stat to overheat, same as the element so I would just look at the basics first these types of faults are usually down to insufficient airflow or customer misuse.

    Hi Phil,

Most helpful. I will double check for blockages to airflow. Your comment re the relay is most reassuring given the cost of a replacement.

    Thanks v much
