    Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can advise me. I have an Admiral american side by side fridge freezer. The top of the frige won’t cool properly. The chiller draws seem to be ok. My wife seems to think that the freezer stuff had slightly thawed but now everything is covered in frost.

The fridge is stainless steel and cost a packet 10 years ago. Does anyone know what the problem could be and how much the parts would be approximately.

    Many thanks, Mark

It could be a number of things.

Check the condenser is free of fluff.

Check the fan motors in side and outside, you need to press in the door switch in the freezer with the door open to check the fan inside is working when the compressor is running.

Or it may be iced up in the freezer and has not defrosted itself properly.

    Hi

Check the defrost heater and freezer fan is running.

Is there snow build up behind the lower 2 freezer baskets ? If so more likely the defrost heater

    Thanks guys for replying.

I haven’t had a chance to check for fluff yet.

Just got in and the wife has a container catching water from underneath the freezer door but the stuff inside is still frozen and the stuff in the fridge chiller is starting to freeze slightly, whilst the top of the fridge is not cold.

Something is whirring away quite loudly when you open the freezer door but I don’t know the difference between a compressor/freezer fan or freezer defrost heater noise.

Definitely snow behind the two lower baskets and the grilles have snow on them.

I take it that if the compressor had packed up nothing would be cold. So am I looking at a £300 fix or a £700 fix. That will make up my mind on whether to keep it or not.

    Many thanks again,Mark

If you have snow behind the lower baskets it will be a defrost heater fault.

    Thanks Bob,

What would that cost to fix. The wifes going bananas. Would that be simple enough for a kitchen fitter/plumber like me?

    Re: Admiral fridge freezer

    Hi guys,
I replaced the defrost heater as suggested and everything went well until last night. Now there is little or no cooling and the freezer has completely defrosted wasting another £200 quids worth of food.
There is a regular intermittent buzzing noise that lasts around 5 seconds (sounding every few minutes) coming from the unit.
Any ideas on what the new problem is?
    Regards Mark

    Re: Admiral fridge freezer

This sounds like the compressor has seized.

If you take off the rear panel at the bottom the compressor will be hot to touch.

If the compressor is hot then it has seized not a cheap repair or DIY job.
