I recently came across a very old oven, manufactured in 1972/3. The element blown and there were dust onto the base. I have been meaning to ask what are the materials made in the element, what are the dust and is it safe? I am referring to old and new oven also did the material used to make the element changed?

I recall reading an article about certain oven made before 2000 may contain it, naturally I am concerned as I deal with it quite regularly and how do I identify it and what precaution I need to carry out for repairs?

I am keen to get the facts straight otherwise I don’t want to panic myself and what are the risks in coming into contact with oven linings?

A rough guide : Insulation used before 1993 could contain asbestos or asbestos/cement compound insulation. Insulation used after 1993 on cooking/heating appliances should be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} asbestos free.

Blimey! that’s something that never occurred to me! my mothers friend recently died with Asbestos related due to exposure when her house was being renovated so i now how important that is, so an older looking oven i’m presuming its only an element change from the front is possible to play things safe then?

I am not the right person to answer that, I would imagine that it is probably ok from the front as long you don’t disturb it but that is impossible not to disturb it.

I am having a bit of dilemma on how to remove the oven for disposal, since it a enclosed unit which I think it’s fine to remove the unit and take it down to the scrap yard. They are used to scrapping cars that contains it. Maybe I should organise a contractor to remove this safely and pass the cost on the customer before I install the new oven? Who shall I call to have this job carried out?

I did some research on asbestos, it is quite scary that it can be found in everyday materials and I may have been exposed to it during my childhood. Yet they still mine the stuff and being used in other part of the world. Basically millions of us are exposed to it and all it takes one fibre to start it off.

There is another research showing that smokers are more likely to get asbestos in their lungs compared with non smoker.

Does this means I will have to wear mask every time I work on the oven?

a small cut n paste from this …http://www.hse.gov.uk/waste/waste-electrical.htm

Asbestos waste and components which contain asbestos – asbestos has been used in older appliances such as electric coffee pots, toasters and irons. Asbestos was also a component of some electric heaters and other items that benefited from the heat resistant properties of the material. Modern appliances are not permitted to contain asbestos; however, operators of treatment facilities need to be vigilant for items which might contain asbestos. Appliances that are over 20 years old might contain asbestos and therefore should be examined carefully and treated accordingly. Detailed risk assessment, training and safe systems of work will be required for handling products likely to contain asbestos. Work should be organised so that materials likely to contain asbestos are identified and work not initiated without adequate controls being taken in accordance with Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2006.

Only if you want to stay healthy Twicky.

    So it’s….

    Face mask for oven repairs.
Rubber gloves when dealing with rodent damage.
Rubber soled and steel toecap footwear.

    Stay safe! 😉

You forgot the yellow kevlar sleeves, high vis and eye protection.

As far as Asbestos go’s, yes it’s nasty and you wouldn’t want to eat it, but as humans we are all going to die.

My mummy smoked on the hospital ward she gave birth on, nearly got the drugs that affected unborn children causing growth defects. Went to a school that was built with Asbestos, spent my childhood riding bikes without holding the handles miles away from home. Both parents smoked like chimneys all their lives, even in the car in winter without the windows open. Played on waste ground and in abandoned factories. Drove my first car like Carlos Sainz on acid. Spent a Xmas eve in in A & E after p*ssing of some guy. Spent many more nights pisssing people off. Played ice hockey and p*ssed a few more peeps off.

So I’ll be f*****r eyed if l’m gonna be bothered about some Asbestos in a cooker.

    Re: Abestos in oven?

My Aunt died a couple of years ago from Asbestos related lung cancer (Mesothelioma) caused by the Asbestos lagging in the fan assisted night storage heaters that were installed new in the 70’s.
They were only removed about 8 years ago when the fan units failed.
Found the installation instructions when we cleared the house and they warned about its safe removal if the elements needed replacing.
