We have a Bosch WAE22460 front loader washing machine that has developed an interesting issue whereby it heats the wash to (I’m presuming here) at least 60 (maybe even 90) degrees every wash, no matter what cycle is used and what temperature is set.
A cold wash comes out hot. The machine draws 2kW when in use as it heats the water, dropping to around 1kW when in the spin cycle.

I’m guessing there’s an electrical fault somewhere but I don’t know what as everything else works as normal, just not the temperature. I first thought the thermostat but then why would it even try to heat the water on a cold wash – surely that defines “just use inlet temperature”?

I’m hoping the main board isn’t faulty as I’m guessing that, with call-out fees and installation charges it’d likely be better to get another machine. As they also want about $200 to just have a look I’m keen to find out if anyone has a good idea of the fault or how to narrow it done before my wallet gets empties by a repair man or a retailer.

The machine is nearly 8 years old and is used pretty much daily, at least 6 loads per week (family of 5). It was pricey brand new and I’d expect a little more of it than this – it had the element replaced during warranty so I’m not overly enamoured with the Bosch quality.

    Any ideas?

If the heater is always on then it’s almost certainly going to be a thermistor or thermostat fault or the board.

Your estimation of use though I would think is a little on the low side…

It is quite astonishing how it adds up, even although it may not seem so.

So, eight years out it washing for five people is actually not that bad at all.

I’m pretty certain that my estimate is good. 3 of the five are little people, two of which didn’t even exist when it was bought. You can get quite a few small clothes in the space of a load especially when it’s all shorts and t-shirts. However I’m guessing the machine may be a Chinese made one so I may have had my lot out of it.

Is there any way that you know of to work out which of the three faults is most likely? My feeling is now that it isn’t the thermostat because a cold wash should require no check of water temperature.

Any recommendations for replacements? I’m thinking German built Bosch or Siemens (can’t justify Miele prices in Oz).

Heater relay on the control board jammed on.

RRP of the power module in Australia is $175.00

At 8 years it would also need carbon brushes if they haven’t yet been replaced so you should be looking at a repair cost of $350-$450.
