I recently purchased a Hotpoint RLAV21 “under counter” fridge, second hand from a charity shop.
It cools the food down almost to freezing, but the compressor is constantly running no matter what setting I have the thermostat set to.
So, should I be looking at buying a new thermostat? A quick Google search shows I can get one for about £17 before I start shopping around. Is it easy to fix? I am reasonably technically skilled but no engineer.
Or is it possibly some other fault?

It could be low on refrigerant or the compressor is worn not pumping correctly.
The refrigerant would not be cooling near the thermostat to turn it off.
It is unlikely to be a Thermostat fault if it is running continuous
I have checked your model and it has no external fan so this would not be the fault.
You can also check the light inside is turning off as this can make a fridge run continuous if it stays on.
A good way to check the internal light is with a phone camera on vidio put it in the fridge close the door leave it for a few seconds take the phone out and check the vidio to see if the light turned off.

Hmm the back of the fridge (inside) is colder than the front.

It will be colder at the back as this is where the cooling takes place.
It do sound like it is a compressor or refrigerant fault.
If it is running continuous the back panel inside should be iced up all over.
If it is just cold then it will be the refrigerant or compressor.

The back panel is icing over too.
Ordered a new fridge. I’ve googled now and found quite a lot of problems with this model.
A shame as it was only 2 years old…but then maybe that’s why it was donated! The shop does check fridges but I guess they ran it for a couple of hours and did a PAT test.
