I have an old, built in larder fridge and I cannot see any make/model ID on it (sorry).

The problem is that once the compressor kicks in it doesn’t turn off. The inside gets colder and colder as verified by a fridge thermometer. Turning the thermostat control does nothing until I turn it to 1 when there’s an audible click and the compressor stops.

The compressor will then start up again after an hour or so; and continue running until I turn the thermostat to 1.

There are brown leak stains where the phial is attached to the back wall of the fridge so maybe the phial has eroded/failed (the fridge is at least 20 years old).

Does this sound like a failed phial/thermostat? The fridge has a wet wall and auto defrost function so if it is a failed thermostat would the Ranco VXO be its replacement?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It is more likely to be the compressor at fault worn and not pumping correctly or it has a small leak and lost some gas.

If the thermostat had a fault then it would not run at all.

It is a sign the refrigerant is not getting cold enough near the thermostat sensing point.

As it is 20 years old it would be beyond economical repair.

Bob, thanks for the quick reply.

Just a quick follow up question, if the phial had leaked it’s gas would the compressor run continually or not at all?
