ParticipantLast night it stopped heating, but carried on spinning.
Took the heater out (I’d replaced it myself a couple of years ago). Connected a meter across it. Got 26 ohms, which I gather means the heater is OK.
How do I actually test the thermostats? There are , according to the manual, 2 of them on the heater.
Also, the exhaust, how do I:
a) test it
b) remove it
Though after fiddling with it yesterday it seems to be working again. I’m just a bit concerned that the thermostats may have failed and leading to a risk of overheating.
Thanks.

Heater normally comes with stats so presumably they too were fitted? The stats attached to the heater box should both be closed circuit. Often the spade terminals to them overheat and burn causing stat failure. A new pair of stats may be all that’s required. Check them out!

Thanks.
How do I check the stats. Where do I actually put the probes of my multimeter?

Remove spades on each one first.

Thanks. I must be really thick, you’ll have to bear with me. I take the spade connectors off, yes? Where do I place the multimeter probes?

I’m bearing with you………..on the thermostat terminals.

One on each, yes? That’s what I did and it read 26 ohms. So OK then?

26 ohms reading on both stats? They should both be zero ohms (dead short) and you say the element also reads 26 ohms? Has your multimeters dial stuck like the proverbial village church tower clock?

Thanks for your replies Martin. We must be at cross purposes here. I can’t really understand how I’m supposed to measure the thermostat resistance. The multimeter is digital.
The heater’s back in so I can’t take a photo. And as the tumbler drier seems to be working OK we’ll just have to leave it for now.
Thanks for your efforts.

You can’t, the thermostats are a simple switch and not a resistive device, therefore zero ohms. In the case of these stats the terminals burn and frequently fail as a result. Look closely at those stats but put your multimeter away first! 😉

<img src="
” alt=”” class=”bbcode-img”>I did take photos, I remember now:1. Are the two things that are roughly pencil shaped (short fat pencils!) the thermostats?
2. How do I measure the resistance? Yes, I understand it’s either zero ohms or infinity.I realise it’s a switch.
3. I took two spade connectors off those two things, put the multimeter probes on each, and got 26 ohms, roughly speaking.

The thermostats are the two things that are screwed to the top of the heater. One has two white insulators and the other has the two green insulated terminal covers.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWZ121 how to test thermostats?
Thanks. To the left hand side of my photo, yes?
So to test them I take the spade connectors off? Then test for open or closed circuit, 0 ohms or lots of ohms? And I want 0 ohms, assuming the heater is cool?
What are the two long things, btw? Thermocouples? or just terminals.
Thanks for your patience with this.

The two long things you are describing are the terminals for the heater.
To test the thermostat, remove the two wires to each stat and measure the resistance. You should have 0ohms.
