Our Hotpoint GW66X gas cooker does not seem to be heating properly. I have to admit I have not really fault found the oven yet but I would like some pointers of where to look first. The cooker has not been cooking food properly for a couple of weeks. It cooks, but too slowly. Using a non-contact IR thermometer I was getting a reading of around 150-160C on the walls at the top of the oven when the set temperature was gas mark 5. So about 40C too low. Is it likely to just be the thermostat? I say “just” because a quick Google seems to suggest £40-50 for a new thermostat. Would replacement involve breaking gas seals so require a qualified engineer or could I DIY? Thanks in advance.

Replacing the thermostat does involve breaking the gas supply.

Check the burner is clean though as if there’s dirt or whatever blocking it that could, possibly, be a reason. If that’s the case it may also not combust correctly.

Thanks kwatt, I will have a look at the burner though I think it is probably Ok. So I expect I will have to get someone in to look at it, though as the thermostat is likely to be ~£50 + the labour, and I would really like a cooker with a wok burner, I might just bite the bullet and replace it. Bit annoying though as generally it’s not been a bad cooker – though the top oven was always completely rubbish. Do you have any opinion on which brands of cooker are good these days? It seems like everyone I hear talking about their cookers seems to be disappointed one way or another.
