ParticipantWe’ve just bought our first home. We need a fridge-freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. We’d like a dishwasher but not essential. The main problem comes down to cost – do we go for el-cheapo budget range, and get better stuff a few years down the line when we have more money, or buy on finance and get something more decent?
We visited Currys at the weekend but were overwhelmed with choice and confusion over models. I was then up all night reading some of the articles on this site 😯 .
Refrigerator – would love an American-style one. No need for water/ice dispenser. Just needs to do its job well. Width max 1m. We don’t eat meat, but do have lots of frozen stuff eg burgers, vegetables, as well as freezing meals in advance. Would like a finish in black or silver/metallic. No idea about brands nor what price range to aim for. Have heard mixed things about Beko and Samsung.
Washing machine – typically, the one my mum has supports 8kg and in the 15+ years she’s had it, only the door lock mechanism went once. For three adults, we’d be looking at 8kg load, washing 3 times a week. Needs a delay timer. We’ve been advised Miele but a bit out of our price range. Had a look on Which guides, John Lewis and ao.com to look at some Bosch models that are around £500 mark. The cheaper ones are £250 and the more expensive ones close to £800.
Tumble dryer – condensing version and just needs to dry. Our current one (I think is Zanussi) just has a timer dial for hot/cool drying and has been in the garage for the past 10 years. Personally, I tend to tumble dry all my clothes (apart from shirts), so whatever I stick into the washing machine gets stuck into the tumble dryer. Again, I thought about Bosch but no ideas where to start.
Dishwasher – not essential but useful for those times when we have too many pots and pans to wash eg guests over. Current 10-year old zanussi one gets used maybe 20 times in the entire year usually in short bursts. This one needs to fit a space in the kitchen and depth of the space is 57.5cm. Would want it to sit flush with the cabinets. Can be full sized width and height though. Doesn’t need to be integrated or anything though.
Any help and advice will be welcome. I’ll try and post some models when I find the ones I was looking at last night 😀

Hi
It appears you are in the early stage of researching products. There is a good read here on all the product groups you mention.
The only thing I can add at this stage would be like everything in life you get what you pay for.So on this basis the best refrigeration out there is Liebherr, budget end a few of the guys on here favour the Daewoo machines.
Washing machine again the best will be Miele, next best IMO are the Bosch. There is a cash back currently running on Bosch so you could potentially trade up and pay about the same as a lesser machine.
Condenser dryer as this is in a garage a sensor dryer will be of no use as it will not work in cold temperatures which is where the manufacturers tend to be nowadays. Best to buy with one with a mechanical timer only like a Hotpoint FETC70.
Dishwasher width please 450 or 600 wide? You will struggle with 57.5 depth as all freestanding machines are circa 60cm deep. Integrated machines are designed to fit back flush with cabinets as generally the depths are usually 55cm to 57cm deep.
Hope this gets you started 😀

Washing machine – quite liked this one. Had a recommendation in Which: clicky
Tumble dryer – this will be in the utility room as there’s space for it in the new house. Again was going to stick with Bosch: clicky but there’s some reviews about the handle coming off?
Dishwasher – off the top of my head, the gap is 600mm wide, 875mm high and 575mm deep. Would an integrated model suit better?
Fridge freezer – I’m still clueless on this even after reading the guide. If I kept with the Bosch theme (not important) then this looked okay: clicky

Hi
Washing machine and tumble dryer I would go with. As I said in my previous post especially with the cash back promotion currently running..
As I said in my last post integrated dishwashers are of a narrower depth, you would need to obtain a door panel if one wasn’t already available though.
The Bosch, Neff and Siemens American fridge freezers are made by Daewoo. Try a search for one of these as it will be cheaper than the Bosch. Unless of course you are just looking for a “name.”

I’m going to be honest and say that if Bosch group use Daewoo then it has to be okay.
Beko refrigeration in general is fine for the price, as for the American range I don’t know.
Hopefully users R600A or Samuri will see this thread and chip in 😉

Don, you’ve been awesome and immensely helpful.
Just need to get my head around dishwashers. I’ve looked around online and it seems I should be able to get an integrated one that fits in terms of depth. Need to look and see whether I can get a spare cupboard door for integration. I don’t mind either fully/semi integrated.

If your not changing the kitchen then I would take a unit door and troll around the kitchen suppliers and see if you can get a close match.
You will get more choice with fully integrated. The numbers of semi are getting less and less so when the time comes to replace this next one I doubt there will be many if any to choose from.
Bosch again for me 😀

I’m leaning towards the more expensive one because it’s slightly larger, quieter and uses less energy.
