ParticipantHi All,
I’m hoping someone can help me out with some advice on my Elba Excellence oven (type: PXDO 60)
Some weeks ago, the top oven started tripping the power as soon as the dial was turned to “oven” (as one does when turning towards the “grill” setting).
So we could still use the grill without danger of accidentally tripping the power, I disconnected the top oven element (we never use the top oven) and taped up the wires.
Since then, the grill started to trip the power after being used for 10-20 mins. After it had tripped and I have turned it back on, it didn’t immediately trip the power – it would take a few minutes of use.
I found if I grilled with the oven door open, it would not trip. But this isn’t how it was designed to be used, and it takes a LOT longer to cook things.
I perhaps shouldn’t have done this, but I noticed it was quite smokey when in use so I used some spray oven cleaner to clean the whole grill – in case it was something to do with general filth. Since then, when I turn the grill on it trips /immediately/.
I am fairly certain this means I need a new element, but not knowing much about ovens I was hoping someone might be able to offer a second opinion as there is, I guess, an equally strong chance it is not the element. A whole grill/oven element (they come as one piece, apparently) is £50. But if the element isn’t at fault, it would be £50 wasted and I’d still need to get someone in to look at it.
So, should I get and fit a new element, or should I get someone in to look at it?
Thanks very much in advance for any help at all! 🙂
Thanks,

most top ovens have another element below the floor. since the floor will get hotter with the grill door closed it is likely this may be faulty
also if elements do not get used they can get damp and cause problems like this. it is a good idea to use all elements at least every 3 months or so to keep them dry

Thanks for the tip, Dave.
I think all things considered, I’ll get someone in to sort this, just in case it isn’t a simple element replacement, and just in case replacing the element isn’t easy enough for someone like me to do 🙂
Cheers,
