We currently have a Zanussi ZCE7551X electric cooker which the manual describes on page 5 as an “Electric slip-in double oven”. It has a flat glass top.

As you can see in this image off the net
there is a plastic trim that could (and in our case does) fit up against the worktop.

We are wondering about getting a new cooker (although we may just get the old one mended). It seems that most cookers are either built in hobs, or require a space between them and the adjacent worktop.

Do such slip -in cookers in fact exist in the UK now? Googling only led me to obsolete appliances or to something similar that still exists in USA – called a “slide in range”.

Actually I’ve just found that the installation instructions say that an air gap should be maintained, even at hob level – yet this immediately follows a paragraph giving a different impression by stating
“a *nominal* air gap of 2mm at either side of the appliance is required to enable the appliance to be moved into position”.

Also I note that different manufacturers’ user manuals online give different interpretations of what a “Type Y appliance” is for the purposes of electrical / fire safety (whether it can have things adjacent to the back and two sides or only back and one side) – and I can’t find any official source that tells you what “Type Y” is or from what standard it comes.

It appears Zanussi’s cookers still only require a 2mm distance all round.

    Kind regards

    Peter

    Re: Slip in Cooker

    Hi

There are loads of “slot in cookers” as they are better known in the UK. Appliances Online here have the biggest selection by far. Bear in mind that the widths vary 50,55 and 60cm wide are the most common ones.

You will need to check the installation instructions of each cooker to ensure you have the correct air space around the cabinet.
