ParticipantHi All
The evaporator of my S20DRSS33-A/G keeps getting frozen up – I’m having to manually defrost about every six weeks. From what I can work out this is most likely a problem with the defrost mechanism? I’ve done a continuity check on the defrost element with a multimeter and I get a reading – can I rule this out as the possible culprit?
I gather that the other components that can cause problems are the defrost thermostat or the defrost timer. I’m pretty sure I’ve located the thermostat clamped to the evaporator feed pipe but no idea about the timer. Is it on a circuit board? Could anyone advise please if there are any simple checks I can do to work out which might be the problem or if it’s something that is so common I just need to buy a replacement part?
Many thanks!
Cheers – Graham

There is no defrost timer.
All functions are run by the main pcb which is where the problem will lie.Steve

Many thanks for that Steve. Anything on the PCB I can have a go at fixing? I’ve already replaced the capacitors with the kit bought from this site.
Does the fact that I’ve replaced the capacitors change your advice at all? Does this increase the likelihood that the thermostat is faulty?

Thermostat is easy to test.
Inside the black thermostat block is a thermal fuse on the blue/brown wires which will show continuity on the meter.
Also in the block is a bi-metal thermostat on the orange/white wires which will read open circuit at room temp and continuity when frozen.Steve

Thanks Steve – I’ll get busy.
If it is the main PCB is http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/481221778217-whirlpool-us-fridge-freezer-rear-control-pcb the one you are referring to, as I have an idea there are a few PCBs in there? It was a while ago since I replaced the capacitors and whilst it looks familiar it would be nice to know for sure.

That is the one but just to be sure I would email the store from the link on the shop page with your 12 digit model code which starts 85..
to check compatibility.Steve

Just to say that a month on after replacing the main PCB everything is working fine. A strange buzzing noise that was also occurring periodically has also stopped. Replacing the board is a pretty easy task if you are contemplating it – anyone with average DIY skills will be able to do it. It’s a case of removing the lower back panel and then the plastic box housing the board is on the right as you look at the unit. Just make sure you power the unit off first.
