Help to identify problem with Zanussi ZWF 1637W

Can anyone assist with a problem with
my Zanussi ZWF 1637 W – Progress 1600 7kg (Type P6959449)

It has power but the problem is it is not going through the wash programmes correctly. The machine stops through the programmes at different times and I have to keep pressing the on off button to help it through the programmes. The machine fills up ok and seems to go through the wash cycle but will then stop. Sometimes it reverts back to the start of the programme as when I have checked and there is only say 45 mins left of the cycle and i notice it has stopped only to be back at the start of the wash time of 155 mins. It is draining and spinning ok but i have noticed as well at the start of the spin cycle it makes a kind of scratchy noise. I am hoping that it is just a part that is required as i could do without the expense of buying a new washer if not necessary. Thanks for any help you can give.
