i have a hotpoint 17450 tumble drier. It has stopped working and seems to be a motor or microswitch problem. when you turn the timer on, the motor initially tries to turn then stops after about a second. it then continues to pulse every few seconds. this is in conjuntion with a microswitch mounted near the back panel. it looks like a normal microswitch from the top but has an external coil and another wire leading to the motor underneath. when tested it gets from 240v up to 260v then clicks, cutting off the motor. photo is attached. any ideas?
best regards
stu

wow that brings back memories
thats a start relay. the motor has 2 windings. a start winding and a run winding. when you switch on the power to the run winding goes through the relay coil and since the motor is stationary at that point the coil on the relay produces enough magnetism to lift the core inside the relay and closes the top 2 contacts (yell and grey). this energises the start winding and the motor starts. As the motor speeds up the motor current drops and the relay drops out
the start winding is a high current winding but will burn out if left on too long. Also the relay must be in the correct position as it is gravity concious so operating these units on their side or upside down will destroy the motor
the motors have an overload in the windings and it sounds like yours may have failedDave

You need to familiarise yourself with basic induction motor functions. 😉
That is the motor start relay and you should not attempt to start the motor unless that relay is perfectly horizontal.
It is possible after all these years that relay is now failing, the chances of getting one are very remote but if you continue to try you will burn out the motor.
If you are very careful ( and you have nothing to loose really ) you can carefully open up that relay to clean the contacts with a nail file or similar. Carefully drill out the two rivets and remove the top of the relay to reveal the contact bar and plunger/solenoid. There are two sets of contacts, either end of the contact bar and on the relay terminals. Refit and secure the top by any means you can.
Typing at the same time as Dave, 😀 if the overload is failing there is nothing you can do as it is embedded into the motor windings. Sadly retirement looms. 🙁

May have one if it’s the same as the twin tub and top loader? I’ll check tomorrow.

No it’s different, the twin tub/top loader relay was a 140080, the dryer one is a 170001, you can even see the part number in that photo. Different winding resistances so not interchangeable.

Saw that on the photo after so defiantly not got one. But do have the twin tub one. If anyone should need one in years to come.

Actually I’m fairly sure I do have a 170001 relay, but I have no idea where it is. :clown:
