ParticipantDoes it really matter which brand of detergent you use? Correct me if i am wrong but don’t washing machine manufacturers get paid to promote a particular detergent?

Brands.
Well if you buy cheap powder from the supermarkets they tend to block up your machine and not give very good results
I would always recommend a decent liquid for coloureds and a decent powder for whites. If you did not know that already the powders have light activated bleach in so when you hang your washing out on the line you should notice it becomes more white in colour than if you tumble (as long as its a sunny day).

What you do you define as cheap powder? Own brand? Sainsburys own brand for example is £1.65 for 650 grams. Appears to get good reviews from customers on their website. I use Liquid for colours and powder for whites and light colours. I only ask as i did wonder if own brands damaged machines.

They work, just not as well and in some cases nowhere near as well but can be considerably cheaper.
To be blunt, I guess it comes down to how much you care about your clothes and how well you want them to last, which is of far more concern than the machine for many people given that’s a large function of both.
If you don’t care about your clothes, do whatever as you’ll probably be tossing them anyway.

As for the light activated bleach last i knew was it was only 1 major brand that had the patent and all the rest could not use it
remembering the ukwhitegoods training days
unless anything has changed since then

No, they only have that in the more expensive detergents as it’s not so cheap.

Apparently their is no better way to judge than by independent, impartial testing. Which? did a survey a year or three ago on both powder and liquid detergents. Their findings quite surprising. Out on top was Ariel Bio with Actilift, followed closely in 2nd place by Persil Bio. Coming in on the rails in 3rd place was Aldi’s own brand Almat.
I enclose a copy of that survey to share with you. Apologies it’s a bit fuzzy but it’s been washed up on this web site a few times. 😉
