ParticipantHi, I have a Stoves Newhome 500 si dl free standing gas cooker, at the top of the oven entrance there is no door seal, only a flat plate about 4″ long holding the thermocouple, this obviously lets out a lot of heat from the oven upwards into the grill which is situated directly above. Because there is no airtight seal on the grill door, the hot air passes outwards and onto the surrounding kitchen units. they have now become brown and damaged, surely this is a blatant design fault that stoves want nothing to do with.

Nine digit model code starting 0505 and the serial number required to accurately date this appliance.
Production started in 2001 so the cooker is now nearing or has reached end of life which is why the amount of spares available is very small.
Brown and damaged units from cookers are usually down to manufacturers installation guide on minimum gap between appliance and base units not followed, fabric of units is easily charred, or it could be that the door is no longer fitting as well as it should due to age. Stoves did stock a heatproof strip to protect units if they were needed as optional extras.
I’m also interested to know what Stoves said when you contacted them?

Hi Don,
Serial number- 90906647 Cooker is roughly 5 yrs old. Stoves gentleman I spoke to just stated as it is now out of warranty there is nothing they will do. The damage to the units and door is not at the bottom half where the oven is but the top half where the hot gasses are passing through the gap at the top of the oven seal and escaping out through the grill door.May 30, 2015 at 8:04 am #427743don

If the cooker a tight fit then it probably hasn’t been installed with the necessary air gap.
When the “charring” was first noticed was it reported to Stoves? If there is a trail of service calls to this cooker for the fault you describe and it started from the first use then you may have some redress as long as the appliance is under six years old and proof of purchase is available. This is not an easy issue by any means to resolve, your local trading standards will be able to advise if you choose this route.
Have you tried cleaning the affected area? All to often complaints of charring are in fact cooking deposits which have spat onto the carcass sides and discoloured them.HTH

The cooker is my daughters and I think the damage has been gradually getting worse. It was only when I realised how bad it was and actually had a look I could see the obvious problem. The damage has certainly been caused by heat not cooking deposits, regarding the air gap, I have looked at quite a few cookers since my daughters problem arose all quite tightly fitting in between units, none have the problems my daughters has, it is so obvious when you look at the situation that the damage has been caused by escaping hot gasses. Have found Stoves installation recommendations as attached.
So Stoves have the comeback that it’s not been installed in accordance with their instructions. They also had available the heat protectors which were available at the time of purchase as optional extra.
You can try the TS route but I doubt very much they will tell you anything different.
