I just bought a fridgemaster mul49102 to fit on my boat and thought it would be ok on my 500w inverter as it’s energy consumption value of 118 kWh per year should put the constant power draw at 13.5w (Have I done that calc right? – 118000 / 365 / 24) )

The fridge doent seem to fire up though, and I’ve ben told that they need a surge of power when they’re switched on that may exceed 500w. What size inverter would you recommend for that fridge in that case? Money is an object and inverters are expensive so I don’t want to get more than I need 🙂

(edit – one other thing I thought is maybe the quality of the output form the inverter is not good enough. My inverter is not pure sine wave. Should this matter with a fridge?)

    Cheers

Re: powering a fridge off an inverter

    Hi Will,

You can get all sorts of things not running as they should when used “off grid” as it were as all modern appliances sold in the EU are set to run to the standard off the grids. With the use of electronics, linear compressors and so on they often do not respond well to conditions that they were not specifically designed for.

Often when used off grid they will either not work correctly or at all.

Which is largely why fridges for boats specifically but also caravans and so on are so expensive as well as what is seen as a hostile environment in some cases. Many other appliances, you just can’t get at anything like sensible prices for that sort of use.

But yes, it will likely draw more on start up and only the maker will be able to tell you what that will be. However, the point I’m making is that, even if you get it to run it may not do so for long or properly and for most, you’re not going to have any warranty as they are for “domestic” use in a normal home on a normal power supply.

I seem to recall looking into this before for someone else and IIRC proper fridges for boats kick off at about a grand or more.

    K.
