Hi, I’ve never posted on one of these before so please forgive me for being a bit naive. My elderly mother has a New World series 2 split level gas cooker. It is about 25 years old but until this recent problem has been in very good condition. The clock and timer have stopped working and as a result of this the oven won’t work (she never uses the timer anyway so actually doesn’t need it. As a result of it’s age she has been told that the parts for this particular model no longer exist, so, as she doesn’t use the timer, is it possible that the timer could be disconnected so that the oven could work without it? Also if this were possible would it be an electrician that would do this rather than a gas fitter? I look forward to any advice because she doesn’t really want to go through the upheaval of having to replace the cooker.

You can almost always bypass the timer.

The thing is that, due to Draconian Health & Safety legislation along with the possibility of being sued because people cannot understand that putting a live wire with an earth or neutral is liable to lead to either a bang, fire or electrocution it’s not possible to detail how.

What I can tell you is that the timer is, in effect, a mains switch. Normally it will switch on the live and is a simple make or break affair.

With that knowledge for anyone with even a rudimentary understating of electrical circuits can work out what to do next. 😉
