I recently noticed that milk has been going off prematurely even though the fridge seemed cold. On investigation, I discovered that, once switched off by the thermostat the compressor would stop, but it would not always start again when the thermostat switched it back on.

I have monitored the switched mains from the thermostat to the compressor, which is switching correctly, and found that the compressor will only start if the fridge has been completely switched off or unplugged for about 30 mins.

If the fridge is turned off and back on again while the compressor is running, the compressor will not restart when mains is restored unless it has been unplugged for about 30 mins.

Now, I appreciate that this may be because the start relay has not cooled enough to allow the start windings to be switched in, but the odd thing is that if left in this state (plugged in and switched on) the compressor never seems to restart, allowing the internal temp to rise to 8C or 9C or maybe more.

If the fridge is switched off or unplugged for about 30 mins the compressor starts up as soon as power is applied, and will keep on running quite happily. (The thermostat has since failed, so I can tell the compressor is continuing to run by the lightly-frozen content of the fridge!!).

I assume that the compressor itself is OK and that it is the start device that is causing this, but here comes the problem.

The compressor is a Matsushita model fitted with a start relay that seems only available in France and at silly money. It is type MM8-712B, – see here http://www.adepem.com/055350_relais-mm8 … pool_.html

Does anyone here know if a more readly available, (and cheaper) Danfoss version can be used in its place or is this kind unique to a Matsushita compressor?

I would really like to be able to fix this fridge, (I know it also needs a thermostat!), because it is in excellent condition and matches the Bosch freezer that is next to it, but best of all has a proper handle, not the stupid finger-nail rippers with which almost all new undercounter fridges are now fitted.

If I have to buy a new fridge then I will, but I would love to avoid it if at all possible.

My sincere thanks to anyone who can help.

    Or…

The compressor is running warm and the overheat isn’t allowing it to cut back in till it’s cooled off.

Given the description I’d think that more likely.

I can’t be sure of course but, that’d be where I’d start looking with the info to hand.

    K.
