KeymasterHi,
My Bosch dishwasher cleans everything perfectly well but the crockery smells strongly of detergent when removed from the machine.
The salt reservoir is full, as is the rinse aid dispenser.
I’m using Finish ‘red ball’ 3-in-1 detergent tablets, Finish rinse aid and Finish salt (as recommended by Bosch.)
Is this usual? – I’ve never had a dishwasher before!

Don’t use rinse aid and 3 in 1 tabs together.
Overdose of rinse aid.

If you’re using 3-in-1 tablets then you don’t need rinse aid as well, this will be the problem no doubt.
I would recommend once you’ve used the tablets, go back to straightforward (non 3-in-1 type) tablets/liquid/powder and then use rinse aid.

Thanks for your replies.
I had the same problem before using rinse aid, so I’m afraid that can’t be the cause of the problem.
Any other ideas?

KeymasterWhat sort of residue is it that you have left?

Hi,
It’s invisible, very faintly greasy and smells strongly of detergent. It seems that the machine isn’t rinsing properly but no visible marks are left on the crockery. If I run the machine with no detergent or rinse aid after completing a cleaning cycle the smell of detergent and the greasy feeling disappear.

Hi is this machine heating the water correctly ❓ also is it pumping the water around. sometimes certain types or powders or tablets can stop water pumping around at the preasure to blast dirt away.

check the rinse-aid setting…look under the lid of the rinse-aid compartment and you will see an adjuster (an arrow pointing to a number)…check this is set on no.3 which is the factory setting. if this has been altered then turn it back to no.3
as previously suggested when you run out of the 3-in-1 tabs go back to the plain tabs
does anyone else in your household do the ‘topping up’?…i have known some people put washing-up liquid into the rinse-aid compartment 😉March 20, 2005 at 11:32 pm #129499kwatt

I assume you have tried running the machine with standard powder?
You won’t find many engineers that are fans of 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 products, I’ll allow you to ponder on why. 😉
If the residue is not there when you do not add the tablet then it’s pretty obvious that that’s the problem I’d say.
However it just so happens that I have “The Bible” beside me this evening which states that detergent residues are generally due to…
Detergent overdosing
Old/caked detergent
Using cool/short wash with tablets 😉
Using tablets in a small appliance (4 place setting)
Spray arm not working effectively
Detergent in a wet spray arm cupAs to No.3, the short answer is that if you use any of the ECO programs or low temp programs to achieve the energy efficiency then tablets are a no-no.
As previously stated, overdosing on rinse aid is just as bad as overdosing on detergents and will lead to unwanted residues being left. Underdosing will reult in food residues or streaking normally so it is vital that it’s right as with the detergents.
Hope that helps.

KeymasterRe: Chemical residue left on plates, cutlery etc.
Thank you again for you replies.
I’ve been using the quick wash programme with tablets but I tried a longer programme and it didn’t make any difference.
I haven’t tried any other detergent. I’ve never had a dishwasher before and assumed because a label on the machine said Finish was a recommended product all would be OK.
I’ll try using different detergent (not tablets) and see if that makes any difference.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.

KeymasterFinish as a product is fine, I use Finish powder myself but I won’t use tablets as we have soft water here and one tablet overdoses the machine on almost any program.
Just avoid the “own-brand” stuff, horrid. 😉

Thanks Kwatt,
I’d rather not call out an engineer unless it is absolutely unavoidable. I’m trying everything else in the hope there is nothing wrong with the machine; I probably couldn’t afford the repair cost at the moment.
In your list of the causes of remaining detergent residue was a defective spray arm. Is it possible for the machine to clean dishes properly with a defective spray arm?

KeymasterYes, but check that the spray arms are clear, you can take them off and clean them. They are prone to getting bits of rice, sweetcorn and other bits an bobs in them that affects their performance.
But from what you’ve said I’d be betting that it’s a detergent issue.

Hi,
Following your suggestion I removed the spray arms to check them. One of them was partially blocked by what looked like a piece of sweetcorn.
I’ll buy some new detergent next time I’m at the supermarket and let you know how I’m getting on.
Thanks again.
