ParticipantHi,
I’m sure this question will have come up before but after several hours of searching I haven’t really found my answers!
I was wondering if someone could offer me advice here. I’ve got a freezer that I want to turn into a fridge to store beer (not fermenting my own beer, just standard bottles and cans – I’m a student so can’t afford another fridge and I got this freezer for free!). So my thinking was to buy a thermostat, the stc-1000 seems quite common and cheap and wire that in and run it at somewhere around 4 degrees. I realise though that this could cause compressor to short cycle which could cause bearing seizure etc. So what I would do is increase the acceptable temperature range so the compressor doesn’t have to come on as frequently. Then when it does, it has to work longer to reduce the temperature. But then, is my compressor (seeing as it’s a freezer compressor) going to overheat as it’s warmer refrigerant coming through? So, is doing this going to decrease the life of the compressor and if so, by how much? How long would I have to run it for, for it not to be classified as short cycling and so it remains lubricated?
The freezer in question is an upright drawer freezer, I can’t remember the make and model, if needed, I can go have a look and let you guys know. Is there anything else I should consider when doing this conversion or is it just not going to work?
Cheers, any help would be much appreciated.

in most cases this will not work as a fridge goes into defrost mode each time the stat turns off.
The water then runs down a drain tube to evaporate on the tray on top off the compressor.
If it is a frost free freezer this will also not work as the defrost system is set to work at set temperatures.
It would not cause any problem with the compressor but would flood the floor each time the stat cuts out.

Hi, thanks very much for replying, really do appreciate it.
So, what you’re saying is, it will work temperature wise but I’m going to end up with a puddle of water at the bottom of my freezer? How do fridges avoid this, does the heat of the compressor evaporate it?

Ok, thanks. How do fridges and freezers usually get past this problem, drain pipe? Or do they get it to evaporate or something?
Cheers for the help.

As in my earlier post drain channel, drain hole and pipe leading to a tray on the compressor.

Oh right sorry, mis read that, what does it do on the tray, does it evaporate through the heat of the compressor?
Thanks very much for your help so far.

As previous post yes it evaporates the water with the heat from the compressor.
