ParticipantHi,
My oven has thrown a rod.
I was cooking dinner yesterday evening – the oven had been on for around 30mins or so.
I opened the door to check progress – looking good!
I closed the door (probably harder than normal because the kids were kicking off in the living room and I was needed to diffuse the situation) – there was a spark to be seen through the vent holes to top of where the door opening is – then the house circuit tripped.Turned everything back on at the main circuit, and found the oven to be dead to the world. No display, no fan, no heat, no life!
The oven is hard-wired into the relevant 40A fuse in the consumer unit.
Any ideas when I should be checking for?
Thanks for any help you can given.

Probably the thermal fuse on the top of the oven has blown up. Isolate from consumer unit before dragging it out and lifting the top panel. :zap:

I’ll take a look at that in a little while. It won’t be a standard fuse will it? It’ll be something a little more sturdy, and not the type of thing I can pick up at my local diy merchants.
Also, if it is that fuse, is there likely to be an underlying cause, or is it just one of those things given the age (10yrs+) of the unit?

It’s not a standard fuse and it could have failed due to old age. But, as yet we are purely speculating a possible cause, nothing more.

Understood. I’ll be back later with my findings.

Hello.
OK, taken the panels off.
It has power to the unit.
Bit of a shock really. The inside looks immaculate – all thanks to the pyrolyse function. Behind the unit, and under it’s panels, is a horse of a different colour. Looks like something from “Aggie and Kim’s whatever the program’s called”.Anyway, under the panels doesn’t look great. I’ve tested what fuses I can see (big white ceramiccy looking blocks – tested ok).
Tested continuity across both elements – okLots of cables are burnt away – the insulation that is.
The main fan motor looks carbonised – one of the connectors just crumbled off at the slightly attempt to get the connector off it. No continuity across it – shock! Here are a few pictures of the bad areas…
So, even IF I manage to track down the cause (if it isn’t any of the above…), then as I see it i’ll need a whole new fan motor, and lots of cabling.
Any advice?
Thanks again.

Oh dear! Pretty messy but ultimately fixable if you want to go to the expense that is? How far do you want to take this?

It was a great oven – and the pyrolyse cleaning function was a god-send!
For what I can afford at the moment (upto £350) am I likely to get anything as good?
And would repairing come well under that figure?
But if I repair, am I likely to have other issues in the not too distant future because of the age of the other components?I’m struggling to make my mind up.
What are your thoughts on my next step if I was to repair? The fan motor alone (from the quick search i’ve done) will be around the £100 mark.
… and we still don’t know what the actual point of failure was.
Ta.

The fan assembly (00491685) is £79.57. Cable harness (00491604) is £13.36. So that’s replacing what I see damaged from your photo shots. Aside from that the grill element connectors look as they need attention. Each and every element need testing for earth potential. The cooling fan looks on its last legs (00492871 @ £60.71).
The big concern is, has the main circuit board (00491615 @ £152.68) taken a hit as a direct result of the fusing? Hmmm?

So, worst case scenario, and I replace all those parts, i’m already looking at £300(ish) – and then there’s the unknown. I wouldn’t have thought it easy to really test the board – that’s usually one of those things whereby if everything else is proven to be ok, then it MUST be the board.
So, £300 – BUT, there might be other issues.
OK, my evil alter ego is talking me out of the repair, as it has a tendency to snowball – so, i’ll start looking at new.
I’ll be ordering on BNPL from very.co.uk – not my first choice, but money is a bit tight at the moment what with new car, holidays etc, so i’ll look there. Seen a couple of Bosch (I know Bosch; I like Bosch) models around my, magicly plucked from thin air, figure of £350 – but none has a cleaning function. I’m not a fan of cleaning ovens.
Anyone out there any suggestions from the very.co.uk range? Personal experience as a user? Experience as a repairer, etc?Oh I need a drink!

Single Bosch ovens are rubbish IMO. The self clean Zanussi on Very is a far better buy.
My preference would be a Stoves oven, not self clean But if you get into the habit of wiping the oven out once it’s cooled down much like you would clean a dinner plate after a meal the oven will stay sparkling clean even after many years faithful service.

Hi Martin,
Forgive the delay in replying – work is getting in the way of the important things 😉What makes you say Stoves? Is that down to being a brand you’ve used yourself, or are you a repairer?
I can’t consider Zanussi – despite them being the appliance of science and all that. Been burnt a couple of times with past Zanussi appliances, and swore never to go back.
I’ve happened upon a Beko unit on very.co.uk – specwise it sounds pretty good. Does very well on reevoo.com too
Here’s the relevant links…

Yes I’ve used one for over 10 years in one property. I bought Stoves again for another property very recently. The quality is the same, the usefulness just the same and British built into the bargain. The temperature control is very constant, heat dispersal even throughout. Mine is a double under the counter model so I can grill whilst using oven. It even comes with a proper grill pan and not one but two oven shelves. Your Bosch and Zanussi have no such luxuries. The only negative about Stoves, although the same could be said of most brands these days, is that the user instruction leaflet is rubbish.
And yes, of course I’m in the repair trade and have decades of experience with all the brands I speak about. As for Beko, well I have no dealings with the brand so perhaps other trade members can help you there?
