Hi,all, our elderly Bosch WFM4030GB/04, the last of the ones with an electro-mechanical timer, has thrown a wobbly. It filled, but failed to wash, spin or pump out. Although the timer clicks and whirrs happily right through the cycle, neither the main motor nor the pump show any signs of life. I have seen it suggested that the door interlock switch might be the problem, but if so, would it have filled? Any suggestions please, or after 21 years of sterling service we will have to return the mortal remains to the Fatherland. Thanks in advance, Simon.

The fact that it fills yet fails to drain might, just might, suggest that the inner control dial has broken? The affect of that means that whatever you think you have set it on the dial is in the wrong place. You can discount the door interlock as, as you say, it wouldn’t fill if it were faulty.

It not tumbling once it has filled would indicate that the motor brushes need replacing and/or the heater is faulty.

So there’s a few thoughts for you to check out. 😉

Thanks, Martin, first thing I did was check the motor brushes, they look fine, about half worn. I have the top off the machine and can see the cams turning when the control knob is turned, but the control knob feels odd, as if it might be disengaging at times. What do you mean by the inner control dial, as I think you might be on to something.

The control knob and its inner dial are made up of several separate parts ( see Bosch’s website for exploded parts view) and are prone to cracking/breaking due to age effects of plastic. It may explain the fault you are experiencing. I’ve come across it a number of times over the years.

I doubt the timer or circuit board are at fault. They are built like the proverbial Deutscher Scheißehaus 😉

Thanks Martin, never thought about the Bosch website. Stand back,
I’m going in. Watch this space, I’ll be back when I can. Simon.
