ParticipantI am trying to determine how to fix our freezer. It is an American style side by side Samsung RSG5UCRS s/n D97942BC600147Z purchased in 2012.
I’m aware the faults described have cropped up on this forum for various Samsung models but I’ve been unable to pin down exactly which part is suspect.
The problem is the freezer is not cold enough – it is fluctuating around -11deg (using a standalone thermometer) although it has been set to -20deg. The displayed temperature normally shows -20, although it appears to read the correct temperature for some minutes after the unit has been switched off and on again.
There are no fault codes displayed. The fridge side works perfectly.
The internal fan is working and there is no excessive ice build up. I have measured resistances on the components behind the rear panel using the RS21 fault-finding write-up as a guide. The top connector to the sensor probe is approx 11k ohm. The middle to the heater approx 240 ohm (on this unit there are two connectors for the heater). The bottom (to the fuse?) shows nil resistance.
Some months ago (before we noticed the freezer was too warm) we had a series of events where the ring main rcd tripped off. I had a feeling at the time that this was being caused by the Samsung, but was never able to prove it. This has not happened since. We also had a few times in the summer when the fridge powered off by itself, but I think this was caused by overheating in the surrounding air – removing the grills underneath and improving the air circulation has cured this.
Any ideas what to try next? Thanks.

Hi
Some further info on this Samsung RSG5UCRS problem.
When the power is switched off and on again, the display immediately reads the actual temperature in the freezer. Over 10 to 20 minutes the displayed temperature for the freezer then ramps slowly down to the demanded temp of -20 deg. But the actual temperature is still wrong and fluctuates anywhere between -2 and -16 deg.
There doesn’t seem to be any correlation between the displayed temperature and the demanded temperature when it is ramping down, except for immediately after the power has been switched back on.
I have replaced what I presume is the temperature sensor at the top of the freezer, but no change.
Could it be a PCB fault?
Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with a Samsung RSH5UBMH (side-by-side). It is quite infuriating because everyone talks about “freezer cold fridge warm” problems but not the other way around.
Did you get anywhere?
I called out a repair guy. He says he checked all the components and found no faults. He thinks the compressor is overheating, causing it to cut out, but it runs just long enough to keep the fridge cold. He thinks this because the rear cover had been removed and not replaced and the whole compartment was full of dust.
So he vacuumed this and said to leave it turned off for a couple of days and restart and see what happens.
If it does not work, we could try to replace the compressor, but if there are other complications this might not fix it. So we could just buy a new fridge. A tough choice.
I also find it odd that, just like you, the temperature readout says -20 even when it is warm inside.
Update: I found this post with what looks like the same problem where someone was suggesting to change the defrost sensor but the ultimate outcome is not recorded there: post431669.html?hilit=samsung{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}20defrost{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}20heater#p431669
Here is a report about another Samsung model not displaying the correct temperature when it gets warm, until you turn it off and on again, when it does display the correct temperature. I suspect this is a problem with the temperature *display* only. Samsung apparently said it is a “known issue”: http://consumerist.com/2013/03/08/its-t … mperature/

Rob
Since I last posted I have been pursuing a claim under the Sale of Gods Act with the retailer and the credit card company. Consequently, I have had two engineers visit. The first said it was beyond economic repair (but didn’t really know what the fault is) but the second, who is the official Samsung repair agent for this area, said it is almost certainly a failure of the diverter valve which directs coolant to either the fridge side or the freezer side. He said they have had to repair a number of these in the past. Cost for repair would be about £200, but they can’t get the spare part – and they are the Samsung people!! Incidentally, the engineer confirmed that the perculiar behaviour of the temperature display is a “feature”.
Also, this doesn’t explain the power tripping off which might be an entirely separate fault with the defrost heater. This problem has gone away for now, but the defrost heater won’t be activating since the freezer is too warm for any significant ice build up. So the fault might still be there in the background.
And so it goes on.Nick

Many thanks, Nick.
I ended up replacing the compressor. It had definitely failed. It had also leaked oil into the rest of the pipework which had to be flushed out. For this reason I’m not sure how long the repair will last but I’m hoping a couple of years. So far so good!
My repair guy at no point mentioned the diverter valve. So I guess we just had different problems with similar symptoms.
Good luck!
