ParticipantI have been reluctantly considering replacing an ultra reliable about 10 year old Bosch washer with a new one with better spinning performance. The old one has an average/small 1200 speed drum which does not dry as well as the newer models. What are the recommendations for a reliable (don’t laugh) replacement with a fast high performance spin drier – we have no space for a tumble drier. We are not very heavy users – no very young kids etc. I had considered several times getting an ISE, but at the last minute each time had doubts about the finacial backing of the guarantee and service network. Is there any alternative to the cheaper end of the Miele range (10 year guarantee etc)?

Simple answer : No. 10 yr guarantee an exclusive of Miele. Fast spin speeds mean fast fast bearing failure rates and many makes and models have sealed drums that end up on scrap heap in less than 5 yrs. If your budget is good stick with Miele.
ISE went to the wall a good while back by the way. Good job your hunch held out on that one !

The one snag with the Mieles, apart from price, is that they are wider than standard and I would need to modify the space in the kitchen units so I was looking at other options. Also they seem to be very speicific about cleaning cycles and detergents. I have seen no sign of scale buildup or other gunge in my old Bosch machine despite hard water. Also we use very minimal detergent or bleach, to avoid allergy issues. We have been using the dreaded washer balls for years now and I think this helps. Cleaning performance is adequate but not perfect, but this is better than the effects we had from using detergent.
I have seen no sign of damage from the use of these original, cushioned ecoballs, which don’t disintegrate like the new versions, but I know mnufacturers don’t like them. Do you know of any modern models with flimsy drums which may be damaged by them as they clunk around?October 16, 2015 at 2:50 pm #431001Martin

Most makes drums are wafer thin these days and your balls banging around in these will quickly bash the hell out of them. Especially so those with honeycomb drums. Refrain from even thinking of putting your balls in the washer is my advice. 😉
Our Don from Devon is a demon on domestics. So he will best advise you on which is the better choice of machine outside of Miele. Though be warned, there ain’t much to choose from.
