OK the problem began when i left the fridge part door open for a few hours – the system just wont cool now , light comes on and freezer is ok!

I left the fridge/freezer off for two days to defrost the evaporator coils but the same problem is there.

I have also noticed now that the top part of the fridge has a massive bulge at the back and water droplets used to form on the back of the fridge but i thought nothing of it in the past – silly me – the plastic has actually bulged outward so i am presuming there is some sort of massive build up of ice in there!

Have removed and tested the thermostat at the top of the fridge and its fine – the freezer section works fine so probably not necessary for me to test the thermostat but wanted to check everything before i pull the thing out to do some more diagnostics.

Is this the flap that allows the air from freezer into the fridge?
I think perhaps the two days wasnt enough to defrost the ice in the top of the fridge?

I have now noticed the temperature in the freezer is not as good as it was now!

I have read that a sensor in the top of the fridge requiring the insulation to be removed might be the problem?

Additional info : I also noticed over the years that the bottom part of the freezer (gully under the lower drawer) fills up with frozen water regularly and needs smashed and removed as it causes the bottom drawer to stick to it!

Any heads up before i dismantle this Friday would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Hmmm no replies , i thought i provided plenty of info as well – obviously too difficult a problem to fix so might be a new fridge freezer then!

Had a chat with an engineer online over on fixit.com and he reckons its the overflow pipe filled with water for anyone else that has this problem – we shall see tomorrow when i take the thing out of its cupboard.

It is, the insulation is blown by the sounds of it effectively making it unrepairable.

Rubbish if the freezer is still working how is that going to mean its had it.

The back of the fridge has bulged due to ice build up on the cooling plate – yes insulation may be damaged but i bet you will find you can fix it quite easily if you want to – just dig the insulation out and refill it and unblock the drain. Freon line runs from compressor to freezer through back of fridge. water vapor may have frozen on the line creating large lump of ice. Unplug and let thaw for 24 hrs and see if bulge will go away. Unfortunately this may be a sign of low freon pressure/leak. I will bet you defrosted it with the doors closed!

Have you ever worked on those fridges where the drain hose has a rubber none return flap on the lower end of it? Sometimes they can stick and not let the water reach the tray. Then when you stick a rod down them the force is enough to free them and you don’t see a fault.

Let us know how you get on!

Uhm, digging the insulation out a sealed unit isn’t exactly for the feint of heart and, it’ll have the evap buried in there (hence the moisture using the liner) so for a non-professional nigh on impossible I expect.

Even for a pro it’s not an easy job and generally has about a 50/50 chance of success.

Therefore not a job that any pro repairer will do unless it’s absolutely required for some reason.

You also left out that, to do it correctly and with any chance of it not happening again, that the back needs cut out so air can get in, it needs all the wet insulation removed completely and let stand for an absolute minimum of 24-48 hours (longer the better) at normal room temperature to try to get moisture out of it.

Don’t do that, it’ll likely happen again in a few weeks, you might get a few months if you’re lucky.

I did enough of them to be well enough experienced on insulation repairs to tell you, don’t bother, it’s not worth it and most certainly not on that cabinet IMO.

    So, not rubbish at all.

But hey, if you wanna do it, knock your socks off.

I am an engineer myself electronics and i enjoy a challenge.,

Thanks Mr Freeze thats the info i needed and the in depth reply.
You are actually entirely correct i did defrost it with the freezer door closed – stupid me and im on the dole so i need to save money and cant really afford to buy a new one after the thousands i have laid out in leccie and fixing my car this month so needs must,

I’m gonna do a youtube video on it!
I usually fix computer and plasma tellys etc so this should be a breeze if its just down to cutting insulation out i have a full workshop with all the gear so shouldnt be a problem and besides i love ripping things apart to find out how they work – always have done – its how i learned to be so good at repairing almost everyting from plumbing to car mechanics and I havent had to call an engineer or repair man , plumber out in 30 years – thanks to my good old dad who also did everything himself! Watched the apprentice the other night – amazing how guys these days didnt even know a screw from a nail – i think thats what Kwatt may be referring to he is probably right most men these days wouldnt know a marine ply from chipboard! lol

Thanks both for the replies I had thought no one was gonna give me some info!

Evaporator defrost element maybe burned out – i would recommend anyone always buy a non auto defrost fridge as they can cause fires and are more hassle than they are worth – manual defrosters last a lot longer.

I would have thought you would have got more help on this on here!

Don not let the nay sayers get you down give it a go what have you got to loose?

That is the reason our country is doomed because no one can do anything these days; they just call someone out rather than try and learn something!

Well done to you and your dad – I have the same ethos!
