ParticipantHello,
I’m in a rented flat that has one of these combination washer dryers. The washing machine part is fine as far as it goes. However, the dryer function is practically unusable as any clothes dried in it take on an unpleasant smell. I’d describe it as like hot plastic, rather than a mouldy smell. The whole kitchen smells like this when the dryer is running too. I should note there is no issue at all with clothes that are only washed.
I note a couple of the reviews on amazon complain about something similar sounding, but I can’t believe that it is operating as designed!
Is there anything that I can clean out that may help with this? I pulled out the filter under the front panel but there was nothing really in it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi I would check that the dryer fan is operating normally.
If this is rotating at slower than normal rpm then the heating element will keep heating
as normal but the fan will not be able to exrtact the heat which will heat up the plastic drum.
Hence the burnt plastic smell.December 20, 2015 at 6:51 pm #433954iadom

If the fan is not running at the correct speed the temperature sensors and safety cut outs will either stop the heater from working or throw up an error message long before it gets hot enough to cause the outer drum to overheat. 😉
It could be a build up of fluff of a synthetic nature on the dryer heating element. The only way to find out is to fully remove the dryer assembly and strip down to investigate.

Thanks, I’ve had the top off and back off and I can see a bunch of lint in the plastic part of the dryer assembly the runs down the back. Poking up into the metal dryer duct above the door also revealed a coating of lint/dust that didn’t smell great.
Didn’t have the right torx driver to get the metal dryer assembly apart though, so I’ll have to look later in the week once I get hold of one.December 23, 2015 at 8:09 pm #433956rowanb

Got it all apart tonight, lots of lint and what looks like baked on limescale throughout, especially around the dryer elements and fan. Gave it a good clean out, including the plastic duct that goes back down to the main drum (which was full of lint). I’m giving it a test run now to see if there’s any improvement.
Really makes me wonder how they can design these with no user accessible filter.December 23, 2015 at 10:02 pm #433957iadom

They design them to be as cheap as possible, that sadly is what the great British public wants and it gets exactly what it deserves. :rolls:
