This dryer has not been used for five years and was at least five years old and probably nearer to ten. It has what is probably a simple problem with the doorcatch that is ‘floating’ so that the door does not close.

A reputable white goods repairer will come out and charges £25 call out. If he repairs it, is £39 + parts. The parts if necessary are around £30 and I will need a new vented hose (£10). The total cost is likely to be between £50 and £80. He says he will check to see that the machine is in working order before doing the repair.

My cousin (who lives at some distance) has a friend who is also an appliance engineer. He says he would recommend buying a new White Knight Condenser Dryer as I am only a once or twice a week user and because although repairing the door should be straightforward the age and the lack of running of the dryer in the last five years would concern him even if the machine looks OK on first inspection.

I would be grateful for some opinions on the best way forward?
Is this Creda a quality machine in comparison with a White Knight Condenser Dryer?
Is there a substantially better machine up to £300.?

    Thanks for any advice.

if you have a vented dryer now why swop if you already have the vent hole in the wall an you can pick them up for about £120

the WK dryer is an ols whirlpool design built in Halifax and although the door can be a bit weak the units are well designed , cheap to repair , and are better built than the modern Hotpoint,Creda, indesit

    Thanks Dave

I forgot to explain that my existed Creda dryer does not have a vent hole in the wall – we used to put the pipe out the window.

Thanks for explaining about the origin of the WK dryer and the reasons for your confidence in it.

My cousin recommended the condenser dryer because I am seriously ill and he thought the WK condenser dryer with a sensor would be the easiest and most energy efficient, if not the cheapest option.

A neighbour who takes the Which magazine tells me that the WK vented dryer and the condenser dryer are both considered good dryers but that the current condenser dryer with a sensor actually comes out with a terrible review.

    Thanks
    Stuart.

although which does a good job i have seen them recommend some junk over the years
one of the problems of being an independant repairer is i cant comment on new items as i wont see them for at least 12 months or when warrenty expires

Door switch for this model is £16.50 max, part No: C00095630 and you can pick up a decent standard vent hose for around £7.00 from the shop here at UKWG’s.

    Switch is HERE

PS. It takes about five minutes or less to change the door switch.

    Reply for Dave

Thanks for your thoughts. Many years ago Which once recommended a Bush TV and advised that a Murphy TV was a don’t buy. They were in fact the same models of set, the same inside but just with a different cabinet. Many years ago I used to work in the TV trade. However, sometimes Which does give good advice – I take it as a guide.

I have looked at what customers say about the Bosch dryer you recommended (I have a Bosch washer). I have never bought from John Lewis but they offer their own guarantee in addition to the manufacturers but I do notice that customers not only are vexed about the door but also by the lack of reverse action which leaves tangled and half dried sheets. I am not sure whether this sort of dissatisfaction is because these buyers are not following the instructions but I have cancer an d the treatment for it leaves me fatigued so I am not sure how clever I am reading instructions. Please see my reply to iadom below..

    Thanks

    Reply for Iadom

I was replying to your advice but needed a break and the page expired. I am trying again now.

I gave a better description over the phone to a spare parts supplier who advised I need a latch plate (£9), a door interlock (£22) and a new hose {4m required – £13}. Add this to the call out (£39) and you get £83. This cost is probably why Dave recommended a new WK vented dryer at £120 because how can you be sure that an old dryer unused for five years will be in good working order although in fairness the repairer I rang said he could check it out to see if there was anything wrong with the mechanical parts of the machine.

Anyhow, I note you say that it is only a five minute job to change the switch. I must admit I thought that I should be able to do this myself and I reasoned that spending £30 was worth a go. However to remove the ‘floating’ switch/ interlock? behind the latchplate seemed to me that I needed to remove the front of the dryer. I don’t know how to do this and unless someone can explain I need to bring in expert help which very likely will make the price not viable when compared with a new machine.

If you can explain that would be great.

I would like to thank both you and Dave for giving me your thoughts. Chemotherapy is making me very tired and I am finding decision making very difficult but you certainly are giving me ideas about the options available.

Re: Repair Creda T522VW or buy new?

This machine does not have an interlock, just a simple door switch, the one I linked to in my post so you can see the price of it there. Is the white plastic latch plate actually broken?
It is a bit of a squeeze but the switch can be replaced from above by removing the top panel.

Another thing to think about, your dryer will almost certainly be one of the dryers included in the recent safety recall. If it is you will get the full modification done by them, you may even be given a brand new dryer because at the moment they cannot clear the backlog.

    Check your model here. https://safety.hotpoint.eu/

Re: Repair Creda T522VW or buy new?

I stand corrected. I repeated to you what I was told by the service company.

The white plastic latch plate has disappeared or more likely five years ago I put it somewhere safe after it dropped out and now cannot find it – so I would need to buy one of these.

I am glad you have explained that access (if a bit of a squeeze) is gained through the top panel.

I have checked my model on the recall safety list (given model and serial numbers) and it is not one of the models affected. Thanks for trying to give me this option.

I need to see if I can gain access through the top but I am too tired now. I will try tomorrow. If I can perhaps you can tell me the cost of the new latchplate?

    Thanks

Re: Repair Creda T522VW or buy new?

Your machine may well have been made before 2004.

Part number for latchplate is C00201014, it is around £9.00

Re: Repair Creda T522VW or buy new?

I have taken off the top and actually found part of the housing that fell down into the dryer. However, I have rung your helpline number and discovered that the latchplate does not come with screws to fix it which are missing and which are not supplied by Creda. I will have to travel 30 miles to try and find screws to fit and because of my health this may be a problem. Furthermore I cannot remove the existing switch which is attached at the back. I think the only thing I need is a spring as I already have the part (if I have understood the diagram correctly). My friend who is retired but a plumber by trade and good with working in restricted spaces will have a look but I think this is beyond my skills particularly in my present state of health. I presume when it was manufactured the door mechanism would have been fixed before fitting the drum because it really is a cramped working area if you don’t know what you are doing.

Thanks for your advice but I will see what my friend makes of this.

Re: Repair Creda T522VW or buy new?

Found some screws and gained access to the switch by removing the top and the side. I have now ordered from the site and when we get the bits hope the machine works OK.

    Thanks
