ParticipantHi all
OK so my parent’s AEG 918504i built in full height freezer had started to build up with frost on the underside of the panel below the evaporator which is situated at the top of the compartment. However it was still maintaining temperature. This has gone on for a couple of weeks.
Today they woke to find the alarm sounding and the temperature showing -7°C.
I had already checked the seal which was fine. My first concern is the contents – I’m guessing it won’t be fit for consumption for long at this temperature?
Next is to ascertain what the problem is. Does anyone know if the parts on this model are readily obtainable and replaceable – or are they constructed in such a manner as to render the freezer uneconomical to repair?
My first thought was the fan. It’s at my parents house so I can’t recall the day to day noises from the freezer – but I’m fairly sure the fan operates most of the time and can be heard winding down when the door is opened. When I looked at it today there was no fan noise that I could detect with the door open or closed – just the compressor.
Thanks!

Update: My parents noted a rattling / scraping noise on opening the door. Leads me to think it could be the fan – perhaps the impeller has worked loose? Anyway it’s empty now and de-frosting so I’ll dig into it tomorrow and update the forum.

OK – I tested the fan and it’s fine. It wasn’t running as smoothly as I would have expected – so I dismantled it – cleaned up the armature shafts & bearing surfaces which were dry & slightly contaminated – added a couple of drops of motor oil to each bearing & re-assembled. Lovely & smooth running now with a long wind-down 🙂
I checked the defrost heater resistance – nada – nothing – O/C 😯
So I guess that’s what the problem is. The evaporator was one great big chunk of ice when I initially inspected it. I’m guessing the ice eventually impinged the fan impeller which would explain the scraping noise which could be heard when initially opening the door.
So I need to order a new defrost heater. Anyone any suggestions for a good place to buy one from?
