I want to replace a very noisy 900cm AEG X79463MD20 wall mounted cooker hood with a quieter but similar one.
The only problem I see is that the size of the existing duct which is above the ceiling and cannot be accessed is only approx 100 x 40mm. This was installed when the house was built in 1993. There is one 90 deg bend and a straight run of 3 m to the outside.
Most fans now require a duct of 120mm dia min.
I would appreciate any advice on the size / air flows I should look for so I can use the existing duct.

    Thanks

    Hi

All the hoods now require a minimum of 125mm and the better ones 150mm upwards.
You’ve got a 4 mtre run of ducting which is normally the maximum recommended 1 bend equals 1mtre and to be honest this is what is more likely causing the noise issues as the air is restricted. The only option you have is to replace the round ducting with oblong ducting and that will normally go into the space between joists ect and also gives a cleaner quieter airflow. Can you lift the floor boards upstairs to access the ceiling void ?.
