ParticipantHi All,
please could someone help me to diagnose a fault in my Smeg oven. The oven has two elements, one doesn’t come on at all (which I’ll replace) the other immediately heats to full. The oven selector switch isn’t required to reproduce the fault, the working element will immediately heat when the oven is powered by the mains isolator switch, the only way to turn the element off is by isolating the oven completely from the mains.
I’m not sure if the faulty element is causing a short, or the selector switch or something else.
Any help to diagnose what’s might be causing this is appreciated.
Thanks.January 12, 2016 at 11:15 am #434425kwatt

There are four elements in that oven, what one is it that heats constantly which is a desperately unusual problem?

Its the two fan elements at the rear of the oven. Not the top/bottom elements.
If it helps, both fans spin up ok,

I know it has the four heating elements, but you weren’t clear on what element was on and which faulty. 😉
If it’s one of the fan elements coming on full tilt when power’s applied the only thing I can think of is either the selector switch faulty or a wiring problem of some sort. If it’s wiring the only thing to do is sit down and try to figure it out.
There are thermostats but they are safety ones, they wouldn’t cause this I wouldn’t think.

Hi
There is also a small PCB at the rear that controls the oven also if I remember correctly.

If your model as a small pcb at the RH side (rear view) it will be one of the relays stuck on

Last night I tested every component I knew how to test with a multi-meter and everything appeared to be working fine. Eventually I gave up and put everything back together and decided I needed to call out an expert. For the hell of it I tested one last time – and it worked!!!
I’ve no idea what was wrong, I can only assume it was grime on a connector or similar.
Thanks for the comments – much appreciated.
