MANDELLS
ParticipantHi there i now have a collection of 7 wma pcbs sitting in the workshop gathering dust, i hear that EMWs or something like that repair them but when you want to get the job done there and then after doing the obvious metering checks it would be nice to have a clue as to what has caused the blown track or one of the surface mount ic to blow and get the job done there and then. Twice now ive been out on a job done the routine checks, changed what i thought was the problem in both cases doddgy edge connectors only to fit and programe the module get the machine up and running fine only to be called out with the same problem, blown module. I just tell them to phone hotpoint now.
Is there i diagram available that pionts on the module as to what ic does what?

The only non obvious problem I have come across is the door locks, usually replace if no obvious “short” is found, seems to work for us.

Faulty motors, with badly burnt or arcing brushes etc will blow the board.
If I change a door interlock I always open up the ‘ faulty’ one to check for any sign of a fault.March 30, 2005 at 9:29 pm #130387Phidom

They are a nightmare, although the faulty ones I’ve been to have not had any visible damage. I went to a WMA12 last week, symptoms were door unlocking and door light flashing every 5 minutes through the wash. I changed the interlock and thought that had cured it. Next day, called back, same symptoms. Fit recon. board (not EMW), try it on a spin but it just agitates for 14 minutes, no spin. Try a B programme and it stops filling after about 3 seconds and proceeds to do the wash with about half a pint of water. Try it on a D wash and it fills normally. Sent original board to repairer to see if they can do any better job curing the interlock activation fault but they left me a message this afternoon to say they can’t repair it. 👿

A considerable number of boards are in fact not faulty, you should run a ‘last fault’ test program and also a full functions test program before changing the board.
As regards recon modules, I have found that QER are about the best that I have encountered.March 30, 2005 at 9:48 pm #130389Phidom

I went armed with an EMW leaflet on Last Error codes but it tells you to look at the Final Spin LED and the WMA12 does not have one.

If you check iadom’s website Mandells, he was a senior Merloni (GDA/Indesit Company) engineer and would have had the advantage of the technical information and equipment to enable that sort of testing to be carried out.
Such information is actively restricted from view to the Independant engineer and one issue Martin has been dealing with.
That’s no critism iadom by the way, if you have that info to hand, great, and the fact that you are prepared to share some of that knowledge here is most welcome 😀

Merloni, ugh 😥 . It was BDA when I started and Hotpoint when I left in 1978, I keep up to speed on tech issues as well as I can with occasional help from ex colleagues, sadly most of them are now retired so specialist info is getting harder to obtain.
PS. I actually liked the 1600, I considered it a challenge. 😉
Re the EMW leaflet, it possibly only refers to WMA 30 and up with four or five option buttons and a row of progress lights. This info is in the Hotpoint manual for these models but for some reason the WMA10/20 range have a separate service manual & diagnositics manual. I am in the process of trying to obtain the latter.

Participanti had problems with an wma board recently….door lock light flashing i knew this fault because i was caught out with it b4 ie fitted interlock and got same prob…so now i change both..interlock and pcb…the job i had recently bounced on me… ie same prob as original..door light flashing….looked at pcb …door triac blown…decided to recheck everything and noticed a small water mark on the door switch….i then checked door seal and discovered a minute hole in which had been jetting out tiny amouts of water onto the interlock..thus blowing interlock & pcb…
