…….but on the plus side, once the clock is removed the hood can be hooked on the vacant nail and then plugged into the socket just below the (stolen?) VW badge.

This may seem an obvious question but…
Was it plugged in and working or just bunged up there out the way?

I reckon it was left there and blocked up at the front when they had the kitchen last done.

Maybe they discovered the space above the hob was too narrow, and having an existing ventilation duct at high level, they decided to put it there. A reasonable compromise for a tiny kitchen, maybe, although I bet the grease filter doesn’t get changed too often.
