Can anybody help me solve a problem with my Hoover Optima fridge freezer please, it is not very happy!

We found the freezer door slightly open one morning and all frozen food a bit soft. Both fridge and freezer were very warm inside and it was not working. We went to look at new fridge/freezers and on our return pushed the buttons again, surprisingly it made a noise as if is started, this seemed only to be the fan in the freezer bit. We have left it running like this, but have not heard what I think is the compressor kick in or out, like it used to do. We fixed a thermometer inside the fridge and slowly over about 12 hours the freezer has frozen and the fridge has slowly achieved 5.5°c, but it is certainly nowhere as efficient as it was.

Can anybody suggest what I can do to put it right please?

    Many thanks.

Re: Hoover Optima fridge freezer problem

    Yes, well hopefully anyway.

If this is a frost free unit (model number ???) the door being left open will have caused an ice build up around the evaporator causing a restriction in air flow.

The only way to get rid of the excess ice is to empty it completely and leave the doors open for 48 hours.

After that it should be OK, if not it’s time for professional help.

Try that and let us know the outcome.

    Dave.

Many thanks for your incredibly swift response, will certainly do as you suggest once we’ve eaten most of the food left in it! I’ll let you know if it solves the problem. Regards Tripoduk

HOOVER OPTIMA FROST FREE FRIDGE FREEZER
Model No HF 40 D001 UK

Hello Dave, I’ve completed your defrost instructions and it seems to be working a bit better, although not entirely. After the defrost, the freezer cooled down very quickly, but the fridge took 12 hours to get down to 5 degrees C (a little ice was forming on the back wall, I assume this is normal?) but each time the door is opened, it shoots up to 8/9 degrees and then struggles down again! Also when the fast freeze button is pressed the whirring noises it makes stop, as if switched off!
Lastly prior to this problem the F/F made a really loud clunk/judder as the motor cut out – it doesn’t seem to do that anymore, it’s much quieter now.
Do I have an unhappy Hoover? – I would welcome your views and advice.

    Many many thanks
    Tripoduk
