    I have a Whirlpool Heavy Duty Series 8 tumble dryer which has stopped working.

    The model is RLEQ8033RW0 and the type is EDOT-ELE-2305024-FM46 and is around 10 years old.

    It’s fed from a wall isolated switch with a built in indicator light. The first sign of the dryer not working was when I noticed the wall socket switch indictor light was off.

    I thought this may be a faulty switch but noticed that when I checked the output terminals of BOTH live and neutral, they were both live using a mains tester screwdriver. I thought this was strange that the neutral was live and found that when I disconnected the dryer cable totally from the switch, that the wall socket switch indictor light came on again. This may well be a clue to someone who knows these machines but to me it’s another puzzle?

    I removed the top lid from the machine hoping to find some sort of fuse but all I found was a printed wiring diagram on a sheet of A4 paper.

    Would anyone be able to advise me on what to do next please.

    switch is faulty

    neutral failed

    When you say ‘switch is faulty neutral failed ‘ do you mean the wall switch? Or is it a switch within the tumble dryer?

    from what you say you have 2 lives in the wall switch. if that is the case its probably faulty
    unless you have 4 lives on the switch in which case it may be further back

    only thing to beware of is the mains test drivers light on anything over 90 volts so it is possible to get false readings

    I have just replaced the switch with a spare immersion switch I had lying about but this has not had any effect.

    there is a fuse inside the dryer. its hidden in the wiring of the control panel in the middle of the wiring loom

    have you now got a live and a neural coming out of the isolator ?

    I can’t find a fuse anywhere. I have the top grey control panel removed & can see the looms going to the various switches. There is a connector on the black cable going to the on / off switch but it is just a connector inside & not a fuse. Do I need to strip it back further & where please?

    I still have a live reading using a mains voltmeter in both the live & neutral within the isolator switch. They both give a reading of 270v

    well that’s wrong without a neutral it wont work


    get a table lamp, take the plug off and connect the wires to your isolator. if the lamp work than neither will your drier

    Thanks for your help here Dave. I have now found the problem which was simply a loose connection in the meter box on the neutral side.

    I tested the switch using a table lamp and it did not light so I knew it was on the neutral side. We had an electrician install this cable some years ago on its own circuit and I guess the copper strand simply compressed.

    typical modern installation we were taught to twist the cable so it did not compress i find so many joints like this.
    none of mine ever fail
