    Hi,

Apologies if this has been posted before – I have looked and seen somewhat similar posts, but not the same so I hope this is ok 🙂

My dishwasher is approaching, but not yet 2 years old, with of course a 1 year warranty (did anyone ever try to demand that people honour the EU 2 year warranty successfully? http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/co … dex_en.htm )

In the last 2 days it has developed a “sucking noise” as if air is in a motor, or the inlet valve was open.

It’s still working just fine – I’m trying to fix it before it breaks 🙂

It seems to me that the drain motor which is only used occasionally is fine because the tone is unchanged – the “sucking” noise is present during the normal wash cycle, but not drying, so I’m thinking it’s the recirculation pump? (filters etc. are all clean – i’m pretty good in general and they were the first thing I checked)

If anybody has any hints as to how I could verify that my guess is correct I would be most grateful – I can see the pump for about £75, but the dishwasher was only £200 so I can’t justify getting an engineer to look at it and if I replace the pump unnecessary i’m spending about a third the price of the appliance…

    Many Thanks in advance!
    Rob.

I can’t tell you what the noise is but, if it’s working okay I’d ignore it until there’s cause not to.

What I can tell you is that the EU two year warranty isn’t what you appear to think it is and, it’s a common error.

It is an EU harmonisation of legislation across member states that effectively gives other EU members the same rights, up to two years at least, as we already enjoy in the UK for up to six years for England and Wales and five years in Scotland.

You must be able to prove a pre-existing fault from new and, if you cannot then I’m afraid that the reality is that you’ve pretty much not got a leg to stand on.

Therefore you are actually afforded greater protections under UK legislation than you are under the EU legislation you cite.

It is in either case most certainly *not* a free extension to the warranty offered by the manufacturer in any EU state. Despite what may be portrayed in the media, social media or whatever.

With no fault in evidence and no fault from new until recently I’ll let you guess what the chances would be of a successful claim under either. 😉

Yeah, I happened to listen to Martin Lewis BBC podcast after posting that and he said pretty much the same thing.

Unfortunately I think I also have to agree with you on the best course of action being to wait and see what stops working and then fix that. I’ve seen people on here and elsewhere complaining that PCBs died when a pump or motor gave up, but I guess I need to just take that chance. If I buy a £75 pump and it turns out that a £2 solenoid was to blame I’ll feel like a bit of a tit!

    Cheers again!
