Put this in general as it’s not a problem as such.

Just changed the brushes for the second time on our fully integrated Bosch WFE2021. It’s 16yrs old and first changed the brushes after 6yrs. Machine is probably used every other day.

Like car brake discs, does the commutator also wear?

16yrs old seems like a long time, but it’s only approx 3000 wash cycles, and 3000 of anything doesn’t seem like a big number to me.

Dilemma is we have another machine on order, and as it’s fully integrated it’s not cheap and I’m wondering whether to cancel it?

Yes the commutator wears of course and a carbon brush groove is all too apparent on closer inspection. The armature commutator can be easily refurbished and the groove smoothed out using a ‘commutator bedding stick’. Readily available from many spares web sites and easy to impliment. 😀

Thanks – the commutator looked OK as best I could see and feel.

Have given the machine a few cycles and it seems OK – was initially somewhat alarmed by the noise it was making but realised that testing it without the door panel and plinth in place was making a big difference (as it’s an integrated machine)!
