I clean the drain every time I use the dishwasher but when the cycle has finished the items on the top shelf have residue left on them, the mugs have it stuck all round the outside, this happens on every cycle. You have to re wash by hand as they feel sticky.
Any suggestions on what could be wrong, the dishwasher is 3 years old and has done this since bought. I had it fix about 4 months ago the heater had broken. I had stopped using the machine daily only using when I had company, but thought I would try again using daily but the problem is still happening.

Not knowing the model number I can only guess. It could be the water diverter isn’t operating the top spray arm? The spray arm holes could be blocked? Insufficient water level? Top spray arm jammed by plates and pans on the bottom shelf?

Switch it on empty and stand nearby and listen if there is a change of “tone” as the spray arms turn.

There is a motorised valve that directs the water between the upper and lower baskets during the cycle and when it changes every few minutes it can be distinctly heard, if it stays the same for more than 10 minutes that will be where the problem lies I would imagine.

Thank you so much, I have cleaned out the spray arms there was quite a lot of hard water deposit in both arms, run water to make sure the water was coming out of all the holes in arms. Switched on and listen for changes all okay.

Oh dear! Not using salt in the water softener then eh. Then there will be more trouble to follow I’m sure. 🙁

You are sure that top spray arm is rotating? (Check its position every few minutes to confirm)
