ParticipantI have had a call from a customer due to a 6 month old machine causing smell of drains in sink when it starts.
Customer has said they have been told this is caused by the drain hose being too long and the water sitting in it causes the smell.
I have never heard of this an would have thought that as all machines have water in the sump and lower section of the drain hose and the bacteria causing the smell would do so regardless of quantity. ~Only possibility I can think of that would make a difference is if the hose doesn’t clear enough when draining.
I have seen many machines with extended hoses and not had this issue.
Any thoughts on this.

Likely as not the drain under the sink will need a good clear out as well as the lengthy drain hose will need rodding out with a flexi wire system. You may even have to clear the drain outlet outside the property. Good luck in clearing the muck! Yuck!!! 😕

The dishwasher is connected to the waste immediately next to the washing machine connector under the sink and doesn’t present a problem.
The washing machine and extended hose is only 9 months old so surprising if there is much of a build-up of sludge.April 5, 2016 at 9:31 pm #436802aqualectric

Often the smell generated on drain is the sink overflow being full of rotted cr@p – the washer pushes out a very large amount of water that acts like a bicycle pump on the end of the overflow. To check this, wet a rag and hold it tightly over the overflow in the sink; then pump the machine out. If there is no smell, then likely as not the overflow is the culprit. Most modern overflows are like drain hoses (corrugated plastic hoses) they push on a spigot at each end. They usually pull or twist off easy enough; but be ready for the contents……. :death:
Hope that helps,
Steve.

Steve.I’ve found this with either the overflow or even a lot of gunge up under the plug hole but it didn’t make sense for the dishwasher connected to the same waste not causing the problem unless the position of the waste to the trap made a difference.
