I’ve recently moved house, and the washing machine in the new place makes a strange rattling sound when the drum turns during the washing cycle (and only while the drum is turning). The spin cycle sounds normal enough, and rotating the drum doesn’t produce the noise. I’ve checked the pump filter, and that there’s no give between the inner and outer drum.

The machine is an integrated Zanussi ZKI 245 washer dryer.

It seems to wash clothes fine, and the dryer cycle works, though it’s slow.

The manual actually says “the machine is fitted with a type of motor which makes an unusual noise compared to other traditional motors”, so maybe it’s supposed to be like this. It sounds pretty odd, though.

Anyone any idea what’s going on here, and if it’s safe to use until I get it repaired? Also, is there a way to find out approximately how old the machine is? I’m wondering if it’s going to be economic to get fixed or if it just needs replacing.

EDIT: Here’s a recording of the noise. The drum starts moving around 6 seconds into the recording: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/347 … achine.mp3

It sounds as though the motor brushes are arcing. Time to check them I suggest.

Looked at a few videos of this on Youtube; yeah, that looks like what it is alright. Thanks for the help. Is it safe enough to keep using the machine in the short term until I get this sorted out?

You risk damaging the motor totally so maybe not a good idea. 🙁
