Participant❓ AEG Santo fridge freezer s 75408 kg8
I noticed the fridge had gone from +5 to +12 – panic!
Checked the freezer was ok, switched to coolmatic function, no joy after 5 hours.
There is no ice formed in the freezer part and that is working perfectly.
I don’t know it this means the appliance is ‘dead’, or if there is some kind of ice blockage in the evaporator unit (I think that’s what it’s called, but no idea where it is).
As this is frost free, does it for some reason need defrosting to give everything a ‘kick start’?
Any help would be gratefully accepted please.May 14, 2016 at 7:39 am #437636kwatt

Do you have the PNC number from the rating plate on it as there will be multiple versions of it.

Yes, exactly that.
Frost free air driven fridge freezer by the look of it.
I’d suspect a sensor but it looks as if they’re foamed in, possibly non-replaceable but a pain to swap at any rate.
However there are several notes on the fan motor in the freezer being iffy causing irregular temperatures so I’d start there. First thing to do is see if there’s any blockage or ice build up in there.
There are a bunch of things to be doing but a lot of it is a bit technical.

Thankyou for the reply.
Sadly, technical is not my second name 😉I’ve read in places elsewhere that it may need to be emptied and left to be defrosted in case there is internal ice blockage. Do you think this would help?
If so, do I just open the door with it unplugged and place loads of towels on the floor, or does the liquid defrost internally?Sorry if I’m being stupid with this, but haven’t got £500 to hand to replace it at the moment.

Yes, that’d be a start and clear any ice build up.
Beyond that you’re into checking wiring, resistances and all manners of stuff to track down the problem.

Thankyou again for the replies.
I’m off to get a cool box, empty the freezer, once the ice packs are frozen and see what happens. Fingers crossed!
Does water from the unit leak onto the floor when defrosting?

Yup, old towels at the front of the door would be a good plan. 😉

Not looking good.
Defrosted and got a full tray of water at the back.Cleaned it all thoroughly, but the freezer is working, but not the fridge.
So, moving forward, it could be all manner of things, some parts costing £20-£30 ish each, then into hundreds of pounds looking at the AEG spares.
I’m not even going to attempt to fix anything myself, but have never had an engineer in for anything out of warranty.I know you haven’t inspected my fridge freezer, but with the freezer only working, do you have any idea what the likely problem could be please?
I don’t want to call an engineer in and they decide that all but the doors need fixing and I get ripped off for hundreds of £s!
Looking at everything, it seems that a lot are almost plug and play, so do you, or anyone else know what a reasonable engineers visit could cost, as I don’t want to be ripped off.
Thankyou for your time on this
Cheers

I’d think it was wiring, sensor or fan motor but obviously that’s “best guess”.

Ok, Thankyou.
Looking at the price of these parts, they are not the expensive ones, if this is the problem.
I was getting worried it was the compressor motor and other things, though it might be.
I will contact AEG tomorrow and explain the problem to them, and see if any of their engineers do a diagnostic check before repairing.
Thankyou again

Just a quick Thankyou for all of your help.
After leaving everything overnight, I woke up to a nice surprise – The fridge on +5 and the freezer on -18, so I am really happy and relieved.
Obviously I’m not saying there isn’t anything wrong, but for now all seems well.
I really appreciate all of you guidance, you gave me great peace of mind.
Again, Thankyou. -
