Hotpoint RLA 33P. bought in 2004-5. The fridge has an auto defrost system of some type built into it.
Ice builds up on the rear panel.
Temperature is 5-8 degrees depending on the setting.
I replaced the thermostat with a genuine new one but that did not fix it.
Kind of slightly noisy at times, reverberation of the compressor. Is this the defrost fan trying to work?
    Not overloaded with food.
Not sure what to do or where to look. Manual is cursory only and gives no info on defrosting mechanism.

    Re: counter fridge not defrosting

Is the ice build up even over the rear panel ?.

If the ice build up is just near the top then it would be a refrigerant or compressor problem and on a small fridge would be beyond economical repair and is not a DIY job.

If it is evenly over the back then make sure you have wired the new thermostat correctly and check the compressor turns off with the stat set at zero.

If it runs with the stat at zero then the stat is wired incorrectly.

The ice is at the top so it is the compressor. On checking on the rear there is a slight flakiness or discharge from the two compressor connections, ie the joints are going.
    Off to the shops.
    Cheap or expensive?
Got a building project so there will be a utility room in the next six months instead of just under counter space.
