    The Grill has packed up on our microwave combination oven. Other functions on the same switches appear to work OK.

    The guy who responded to the callout didn’t appear to test anything, checked the part number of the grill element, and said that it was unobtainable.

    My questions are:

    1) Do I need to get the grill element out to measure its resistance?

    2) What sort of resistance should I see between which terminals? – there appear to be 4.

    3) Assuming the resistance measurement shows it to be duff, has anyone got a spare?

    3 a) How much?

    If the element appears to be OK what else should I check without serious dismantling? I have a digital multimeter.

    have just checked on http://www.bshappliancecare.co.uk grill element still listed part no. 282790 £72.85 inc vat

    The microwave oven is a very nasty beast – certain circuits are running at 2.5kV, so extreme caution is to be advised. A typical heater will meter out at 20-50ohms, and should show no earth leakage.

    Considered advice really would be don’t try this yourself – check Directories or repairs@ for a UKW repairer in your area.

    I trust you didn’t pay someone to come and write down the numbers from your appliance?

    Thanks to you both.

    I’ll be cautious – I used to work with Radio transmitters – they scared the **** out of me so I swapped to low voltage electronics, then software. I will use your figures to confirm that it is the element that’s bust.

    No I didn’t pay him to write down the numbers – I told them the numbers when I phoned. Described the symptoms. The guy from the only Siemens repairer I could locate came out, looked, checked for the part on his blackberry, and claimed that it was no longer available – and still charged! javascript:emoticon(‘:evil:’)
