ParticipantThis machine has given many years of perfect service, but when I emptied a load this morning I noticed the clothes on top were dry and those underneath were all wet and soggy. After experimenting, it seems the machine fills and empties and ‘thinks’ it is going through all the steps of the program correctly, but the drum doesn’t rotate at all.
Could this be a snapped belt or have the bearings gone? Ever since a bra wire disappeared inside a year ago, it had made a little more noise when spinning, but otherwise seemed to function well, so that could just be coincidence.
Weighing up its age against its reliability (it actually was made in Germany!), is it worth calling someone out to repair it or would it be likely to cost more than buying a new machine? Or is there any possibility of repairing it myself? Thanks for any help.

Without the full pnc number I’m not sure what type of motor this machine has but if it is a brush gear motor it could just need a new set of carbon brushes in the motor.
They did use FHP brush gear motors in several of these that I have seen over the years.Failed bearings cause very loud noises but don’t stop it spinning unless they have become so badly worn that the belt has been thrown off. Simply removing the back panel will confirm if the belt is in place.

Thank you for your reply.
I have removed the back panel and the belt is fine. The drum can also be manually rotated and sounds much as it always did, so are the bearings probably okay?
I am not sure about pnc mumber. The only numbers I can find on a sticker inside the door are as follows:
E-Nr.605.648 372 F-Nr.094295696
It also says :
Typ: 44 000 03
645.257 850 LPHope that helps…..:)

Can’t find it on the Electrolux info with those numbers, possibly too old.
You need to look at the motor and check it for worn carbon brushes, be sure to remove the mains plug first.

How do I do that? Do i have to open anything up (apart from the back panel!)

That question leads me to think that you may be better getting a local independent engineer to look at it. If it is just carbon brushes then it is well worth having it fixed. 😉

Okay, thanks. Could you give me a (very) rough idea of what I should expect to pay please?

No more than £50 labour and £18 for the motor brushes. Unless you live within the M25 then the price could double. 🙁
