ParticipantHi Everyone. This will be my first attempt at a repair of a washing machine. The fault manifests itself as follows:
Cycle starts, water heats, drum spins and water drains. This all sounds normal – however it needs a helping hand to complete all steps. Once certain runs on the cycle are completed – the machine sits….forever, and as soon as you ‘click’ the timer one notch forward it jumps back into life – runs that section until the next point it hangs. This sounds to me like a faulty timer control.
I opened up the machine and started taking all the connectors out of the timer control so I could remove the control for replacement or continuity testing.
The problem I hit was – it seems as if the control is actually rivetted into the metal frame?! Is this normal? Will there be a way for me to ‘disconnect’ it from a possible mount? If I were to break the rivets…somehow!? how would I connect it back up? How would an experienced repairer tackle this?
Please see pictures I have included as I was starting my repair:

Evening Dave.
I see – so should I try to prize off the black plastic disc on the front of the timer (the plastic which the timer control knob sits on) hopefully revealing 2 screws?
How do you suggest I get a mapping for the connectors on the bottom of the timer considering I cannot get a good look at them due to lack of access to do my original labelling technique?

Hi. From memory when I used to work for Indesit decades ago the timer`s detergent directional cam that is pushed on the timer`s shaft has 2 holes that if you click the timer round you can get the holes to line up with the screw heads that holds the timer on to the chassis….simple and even simpler if you put some blue tac on the end of your Philips screw driver!
Yes It does sound like your timer has jacked to me. Notice the way the timer terminals are staggered making it easy to miss wire even though the wires are labelled…..sometimes very badly printed which is why I rarely if ever wrote down where wires went and just told my customers to push off, don`t talk to me, leave me alone to concentrate and used to change the timers over in one go, wire for wire, though I can see why you`ve taken notes being your first attempt; can be a bit daunting I`ll agree.
The timers actual switch plates were held together by a riveted frame but you might beable to very very carefully prise each side switch bank out, though I might be getting confused with the crouzet made timer, sorry, such a long time ago, but here I would definitely mark which switch side plate goes where and which way up because it is possible to get them crossed over which will lead to total confusion and then to a total disaster. You probably won`t see much in anycase let alone repair your original timer as usually what happens is not the individual terminal switch ends that failed due to sparking but was the springyness of the actual metal switches themselves relative to the section of the timer internal cam each one corresponded to….the heater one being often the main culprit or just simply the timer motor coil failing on and off was not unknown too.
Best of luck with it, Remember: if you miss wire this due to the marking on the wires being naff you`ve probably had it as chance of a wiring diagram back then was zilch and now 20 something years on is even `zilchER`
The 1990`s Omega series I remember were very good machines overall with few problems and since its lasted to now that proves the point!….July 12, 2016 at 7:42 am #439263electrofix

I am assuming you have found a replacement timer
you should have taken photographs before you started
i would not have taken any wires off but brought the 2 timers closer together and move 1 wire at a time very carefully
doing what you have done is more likely to lead to mistakes as some wiring colours are closeDave

It is still not clear to me out I can actually remove the current timer from the machine – still trying to remove it.
Does anybody know where I can source a replacement part? I don’t yet have one and was planning on trying to fix any found problems using some solder and reflowing whatever contact may have dryed up,,,since right now the machine is of little use anyway.

Parts for this machine totally obsolete. It doesn’t even figure on the Indesit/Hotpoint Partfinder software.
E Bay if you are very lucky but that would be used and suspect. As the parts software does not include this machine then your chances of even finding the correct part number is virtually nil. 🙁

Ok – thats not great – but if its an electrical issue I can likely fix this myself, just need to remove the thing from the machine!

Agreed, just rotate the cam until you see the screw heads. Simple enough. The problem of then fixing the timer not so. 🙁

Well i got it out! And now I am looking at this :
side – note the slight discoloration on the solder. There is continuity between this and the other blades though…Really not sure how to ‘debug’ generally because I am not sure what the correct behaviour from a continuity perspective should be. It seems logical that all the 15 should be connected to each other, all the 13, 11, 9, 7 etc etc however some of the rails are not connected like that. I wonder if its because the timer is currently ‘mid’ cycle? Does anybody have experience debugging this kind of thing.
I additionally found this online : http://electrodocas.fr/programmateur-occasion-lave-linge-ariston-indesit-hotpoint-/16636-c00037733-indesit-wn830wf-n65-programmateur-de-lave-linge-.html and was able to order the last one for £46. I would like to have a try at fixing the current one however if somebody can help me!

Looking at that timer part number reveals your machines FULL model number. It is a WN1196W. That is listed in the parts software, so some parts are still available. List price of that timer is £79.00 so you have got a bargain.
The fault on your timer could just as easily be mechanical as electrical. Sometimes the plastic cams of the drive mechanism fail or small ratchets stick.
In the field we would diagnose a timer fault then change it, technical info on the various internal switches for these is very limited or non existent.
NB. As mentioned above no engineer would remove all the wires from an old style timer like this, although it is/was sometimes very fiddly and difficult, a one for one change of each wire from old timer to new is the correct way to go.

In your original post you told us that the machine “hangs” which presumably means the timer drive motor isn’t working. Have you powered up that motor since to see if it works?

Or does it reverse tumble when set to a wash cycle or just keep turning in one direction or not turning at all?

It does rotate when installed in the machine – but stops at specific points in each cycle…..and i nudge the timer control on 1 notch and the machine jumps back into life. Therefore I am sure the motor in the timer control works…..
Iadom – it always moves in a clockwise rotation and cannot be moved anticlockwise.

I think a replacement timer is going to be your best option
