Late last night all the power in the house disppeared.

Selectively turning things back on again showed it to be the dishwasher, which had been used earlier in the evening but had completed it’s cycle.

It’s an old Bosch ‘Independence’ SMS3452 with electromechanical timer. Curious thing is that it is in the ‘off’ position (i.e. no pumps, heaters or motors running), and when power is applied at the wall, the trip does not go immediately, but between 5 and 10 seconds later. Machine is hardwired into the wall below kitchen counter level, with a seperate fused switch on the counter. This means that earth and neutral are permanently applied, so I suspect it can’t be a neutral/earth short.

What could cause this ‘delayed reaction’ trip? I’m thinking possibly interference filter, but any comments welcome!

The interference filter isn’t usually a problem on these but it is very old so can’t rule it out. Leaky motor seal, perished thermostat grommets, wiring harness through the door, rodent damage to internal wires and leaking rinse aid solution onto that wiring harness all need to be checked and eliminated.

My guess, wiring harness break touching the tub. 😉

Cheers Martin. I’ll check all those out ASAP.
